One of the most popular ways to tout your football knowledge is in a survivor pool. Each week, you select a team to win their game to survive as long as possible. The catch is you can only choose a team once, so it's imperative you think ahead when selecting.
We're getting to the midway point of the season, so if you're still alive in your survivor pool, things are likely coming down to the wire. As we get further into the season, the picture starts becoming clearer. Injuries have decimated some teams, while others have surprised us with their success. Week 9 NFL Survivor Pool Advice & Picks
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers got back on track last Thursday after losing three out of four. Los Angeles scored 37 points and gained 419 yards of total offense, including 117 on the ground from Kimani Vidal. But what was most impressive was holding the Vikings to 164 yards of offense and 3.5 yards per play.
One area where the Chargers have struggled is in the red zone. Coming into last Thursday's game, they were only 10-of-24 in the red zone, but they managed to punch it in three times on Thursday in four attempts. They'll go against a defense in Tennessee that sits around league average, allowing 60% of red-zone trips to end in the end zone.
The Titans have been pretty putrid all year, especially at home. They've allowed 35 points per game in their three home games this season, and the Chargers should continue that trend of running up the score on Tennessee here. With a home meeting with a sneaky Pittsburgh team and a road matchup with division rival Jacksonville on the docket before Thanksgiving, now is a great time to pick the Chargers in survivor against one of the weakest teams in the league.
Los Angeles Rams
The Rams are one of the teams at the top of the highly contested NFC West. At 5-2, they're in a virtual tie with the Seahawks. In Week 9, they host a Saints team in deep turmoil. Starting quarterback Spencer Rattler was benched last week in the loss to the Buccaneers. They managed only three points, and the offense has struggled all year, especially on the road, where they've scored 15.3 points per game.
Los Angeles expects to welcome back some of their injured players, like Puka Nakua and Rob Havenstein, on offense. Despite the firepower on that side of the ball, it's actually been the defense that has been the most impressive unit for the Rams. They're allowing just 256.7 yards per game in the air, good enough for third-best in the league. For a team like New Orleans that already struggles to move the ball through the air, this could be a game that makes them completely one-dimensional.
The schedule only gets tougher from here on out for the Rams. Their only remaining home games before Week 18 are against the Seahawks, Buccaneers and Lions, who are all leading their division. This is the last good opportunity to take a strong Rams team. They're at home and double-digit favorites, so if you still have them available, they're the best survivor pool pick of the week.
