NFL Week 1 Weather Report: Advice & Predictions
(All forecasts courtesy of AccuWeather.com | Odds via FanDuel Sportsbook)
New York Giants at Washington Commanders (-6.5) | Total 45.5
Forecast: 71 degrees, 5% chance of precipitation
Wind Speed: 4-6 MPH
The Giants and Commanders do battle in the nation’s capital, and it should be a pretty decent day. On Saturday, there will be plenty of rain, and it should linger into Sunday morning. The field should be covered, however, and by the time kickoff comes around, the sun should start to peak out. By the end of the game, we should see abundant sunshine.
Carolina Panthers at Jacksonville Jaguars (-3.5) | Total 46.5
Forecast: 87 degrees, 30% chance of precipitation
Wind Speed: 8-10 MPH
It’s entirely possible that the start of this game could be delayed, as there is a chance of scattered thunderstorms at noon ET, with a chance of isolated thunderstorms lingering into the first quarter. Even if the rains end prior to kickoff, it will be hot and extremely humid, which is typical for September in Florida.
Pittsburgh Steelers (-2.5) at New York Jets | Total 37.5
Forecast: 67 degrees, 25% chance of precipitation
Wind Speed: 5-7 MPH
There will be a steady shield of rain on Saturday night into Sunday morning. Like in D.C., we should see the field covered leading up to pre-game workouts. Showers should linger right up to kick-off, perhaps causing a slick track in the first quarter before things dry out.
Las Vegas Raiders at New England Patriots (-2.5) | Total 43.5
Forecast: 63 degrees, 50% chance of precipitation
Wind speed: 4-6 MPH
The weather in Foxboro will resemble late October, although the leaves will be green. It will be damp and cool for the opening kickoff, and showers could linger into the second half before things dry out for the fourth quarter. The precipitation shouldn’t be too much of a hindrance, especially in the second half.
Arizona Cardinals (-6.5) at New Orleans Saints | Total 42.5
Forecast: Indoors
Wind Speed: This game is played in a dome
Our first indoor game of the slate takes place down in the Big Easy. Quarterback Spencer Rattler begins his second season under center, opposed by Kyler Murray. There will be a lot of speed on display on the fast track. Is the total too low?
Cincinnati Bengals (-5.5) at Cleveland Browns | Total 47.5
Forecast: 63 degrees, 5% chance of precipitation
Wind Speed: 10-12 MPH
It will be windy on the shores of Lake Erie in this Battle of Ohio. It will be a little on the cool side for early September, and the winds will make it feel like October. Bengals and Browns fans will need to dig out the hoodies for Week 1.
Miami Dolphins at Indianapolis Colts (-1.5) | Total 46.5
Forecast: Indoors
Wind Speed: This game is played in a dome
Another indoor game. I know that it is advantageous to have football played indoors, not only for the comfort of the fans, but for a venue to be useful 365 days out of the year, too. But, I still will always take a game played in cool, crisp air, played on freshly cut grass rather than plastic and air conditioning.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-1.5) at Atlanta Falcons | Total 47.5
Forecast: Indoors
Wind Speed: This game is played in a dome
This NFC South battle on the fast track could be the most entertaining game of Week 1, at least in terms of total yardage and scoring. Yes, a game with signal-callers Baker Mayfield and Michael Penix Jr. could be the best game on the slate.
Tennessee Titans at Denver Broncos (-8.5) | Total 42.5
Forecast: 82 degrees, 15% chance of precipitation
Wind Speed: 5-8 MPH
Generally, when temperatures are cool in the east, there is a dome of high pressure, and warmer temperatures out west. The Titans will feel right at home with warm temperatures, although the 42°F dew point and 30% humidity will pale in comparison to the southeast.
San Francisco 49ers (-1.5) at Seattle Seahawks | Total 43.5
Forecast: 66 degrees, 10% chance of precipitation
Wind Speed: 5-7 MPH
For the Pacific Northwest, this is pretty solid weather. There will be a low deck of cloud, but there is very little chance of precipitation outside, perhaps an occasional mist. And, wind will not be a factor.
Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers (-2.5) | Total 47.5
Forecast: 64 degrees, 0% chance of precipitation
Wind Speed: 6-8 MPH
The NFC Black and Blue Division battle will have coolish temperatures and a slight wind, but nothing too bad. Like a lot of the other games, this will be more like late fall than late summer. I’ll take it. Won’t you?
Houston Texans at Los Angeles Rams (-3) | Total 43.5
Forecast: Indoors
Wind Speed: This game is played in a dome
The Texans and Rams square off at SoFi Stadium, and Houston will feel right at home under the roof. We should see plenty of passing offense in this game, which features running back Nick Chubb making his Houston debut, and wide receiver Davante Adams playing his first game for L.A.
Baltimore Ravens (-1.5) at Buffalo Bills | Total 50.5
Forecast: 58 degrees, 5% chance of precipitation
Wind Speed: 9-12 MPH
In this marquee game in the AFC, we’ll have coolish temperatures with some gusty winds at times. The good news is that precipitation isn’t in the forecast, but the passing and kicking games could be impacted slightly.
Minnesota Vikings (-1.5) at Chicago Bears (Monday) | Total 43.5
Forecast: 66 degrees, 0% chance of precipitation
Wind Speed: 7-9 MPH
It will be a little cool side on Monday, and it won’t be too windy in The Windy City. Look for things to stay very dry in this NFC North battle, as Week 1 closes under the lights.
