NHL Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions: Wednesday (1/25)

It’s a slim slate in the NHL tonight. However, there are a few intriguing matchups on the five-game schedule. The marquee games include the Rangers taking on the Maple Leafs in Toronto and the Hurricanes going toe-to-toe with the Stars in Texas.

Let’s dive into my top two plays on the ice tonight.

Here are our other top picks for Wednesday:

New York Islanders vs. Ottawa Senators

The Islanders have hit a rough patch over the last three weeks, going just 1-6-3 in their last 10 games. They’ll attempt to get back in the win column tonight against a scrappy, young Senators team. This Eastern Conference clash gets underway at 7:00 p.m. ET from the Canadian Tire Centre in Ontario.

I will kick the Isles while they’re down and fade them on the road tonight. It seems like New York has relied on their defense and goaltending in recent history, and that’s exactly what’s been failing them during the downturn. Over the above-mentioned 10-game span, the Islanders have conceded 35 goals, equating to a 3.5 GAA mark.

While the Senators aren’t necessarily the premier example of an NHL offense, they should be able to sneak a few goals past this down-trending Islanders team. Their biggest strength has been their power play, which ranks fourth overall at 26.29%. If the Sens can notch three goals tonight, we’ll be in a great position to cash this ticket.

Bet: Ottawa Senators Moneyline (-125)

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Edmonton Oilers

The lowly Blue Jackets continue their four-game west coast road trip tonight when they take on the Oilers. Columbus dropped a 4-3 overtime thriller with the Flames on Monday night, and they have remaining stops in Edmonton, Vancouver and Seattle. On the other hand, the Oilers seem to be finding their stride as they’ve rattled off six straight wins. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET from Rogers Place in Alberta.

This is a nightmare matchup for the Blue Jackets, who will be tasked with taking on the top-ranked power play of the Oilers (30.99%). Edmonton also brings in the third-best offense overall, scoring 3.7 goals per game. To compare that to Columbus, they are currently ranked 30th defensively, giving up 3.72 goals per game.

These teams are trending in opposite directions, and this game should be a massacre. It’s worth noting that the Blue Jackets have struggled on the road this year, going just 3-15-2 away from their home ice. Let’s not overthink this one and ride with the best two players in the league at home. Give me the Oilers -1.5.

Bet: Edmonton Oilers -1.5 (-145)
