NHL Same Game Parlay Picks & Predictions: Tuesday (5/6)

The Washington Capitals will host the Carolina Hurricanes tonight during Game 1 of this Eastern Conference 2nd Round NHL Stanley Cup Playoff series. Oddsmakers are valuing the Hurricanes as the favorite on the road, despite the Capitals finishing with the most regular season points in the Eastern Conference.

Capitals F Alex Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky to become the new all-time goal scoring leader. Now, Ovechkin and the rest of Washington’s roster will try to prove oddsmakers wrong as home underdogs at Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. with a win over the Hurricanes on Tuesday night.

Last week, my NHL Same Game Parlay came up one leg short during Carolina’s 5-4 2OT win that eliminated the New Jersey Devils. Under 7.5 total goals was the losing leg, as Carolina was forced to pivot to backup goaltender, Pyotr Kochetkov, who allowed three 1st period goals. This set the tone for the high-scoring comeback that the Hurricanes unleashed. Seth Jarvis finished with a pair of assists to cash his 1+ point prop, while the Hurricanes’ moneyline came through 24 minutes into overtime.

Tuesday's NHL SGP: Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals

Carolina Hurricanes (-130) vs. Washington Capitals  (+108) | O/U 5.5 (-130/+106)

Washington Capitals +1.5 (-220)

Carolina isn’t nearly as good on the road compared to home ice. That’s why I’m surprised oddsmakers are favoring the Hurricanes in D.C. tonight against the Capitals, who recorded the most points in the Eastern Conference.

Logan Thompson has been solid in the crease all season and will make Carolina work hard for every goal in Game 1. Thompson held Montreal to two or fewer goals in four matchups during their 4-1 series win over the Canadiens, resulting in a 4-0 record during those performances. His lone blemish was surrendering five goals during a 6-3 road loss in Game 3.

Frederik Andersen is expected to be back in the net for Carolina tonight, which could explain why oddsmakers have the Hurricanes as a marginal road favorite in Game 1. Andersen held the Devils to one goal in three of four starts in the First Round. Carolina’s primary netminder’s worst outing saw him give up three goals on 37 shots faced.

I don’t see Washington losing by multiple goals at home in Game 1. They went 2-2 against Carolina this season, winning both matchups at home 3-1 and 5-4. Maybe the Capitals lose in overtime, so let’s play Leg 1 a bit conservative and insert Washington +1.5 on the puck line.

Under 7.5 Total Goals (-430)

Both of these teams are strong defensively. Plus, each goaltender has played well. I foresee goals being a premium in Game 1 as the Hurricanes and Capitals feel each other out in a playoff environment.

We’ve already analyzed Andersen and Thompson being stout between the pipes. Oddsmakers have set the goal total to 5.5 with juice on the over. Under 7.5 hit in four of five games for Carolina in their First Round series against New Jersey, while going 4-1 for Washington against Montreal.

Let’s buy a pair of goals and grab under 7.5 total goals for the second leg of this NHL Same Game Parlay.

Andrei Svechnikov 60 Min Player To Record 2+ Shots On Goal (-270)

Carolina’s top offensive producer in the First Round was F Andrei Svechnikov. Svechnikov was second on the Hurricanes in total points (6) but he led Carolina with five goals and 22 shots on goal.

Svechnikov logged three and five shots on goal during Carolina’s first two games against Washington in the regular season. Then, he was held to one total shot on goal in the final two matchups played most recently.

I don’t expect Svechnikov to slow down, especially in the playoffs. He logged five shots, zero shots, two shots, six shots, and nine shots on goal against the Devils in the First Round. I’m willing to stake this parlay on Svechnikov staying busy in the offensive zone and getting pucks on net to keep Carolina’s offense in attack mode.

We’ve constructed a solid +144 NHL Same Game Parlay for Game 1 between the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals tonight. I’m expecting a tight, low-scoring matchup that the Capitals will likely win as home underdogs.

Leg 1 is a conservative play with Washington +1.5. Leg 2 is backing two good defensive units and goaltenders to play well, buying a pair of goals to get to under 7.5. Leg 3 is backing Carolina’s top scorer and shooter, F Andrei Svechnikov, to finish with at least two shots on goal during regulation. He achieved this feat in four of five games during the Hurricanes’ 4-1 series win against the Devils.
