North Carolina Fails to Approve Online Sports Betting

North Carolina will not be approving online sports betting in 2022.

The state appeared to have momentum toward passing online sports betting before the legislative session ends at the end of the month, but one of the required bills failed on the house floor Wednesday. Two bills, SB 38 and SB 688, a regulation bill and a legalization bill, were debated today. Both were required to pass in order for online sports betting to move forward.

Senate Bill 38, the regulation bill, passed by a vote of 51-50. Senate Bill 688, however, failed. Without the legalization bill, there is no point in moving forward with the regulation bill.

Earlier in the day, an amendment was included that would ban wagering on college sports in North Carolina. Some states have provisions that prohibit bettors from wagering on in-state college sports, but North Carolina’s amendment would ban betting on all college sports, not just in-state teams and events.

One representative stated that he was voting against the bills because he felt that Jesus would also be against them. Other opponents argued that the issue was not good for North Carolina.

There are two tribal-owned casinos in North Carolina that feature retail sports betting, and nearby Tennessee and Virginia both feature legalized online sports betting.

Online sports betting in North Carolina—and the tax revenue that comes with it—will have to wait until at least 2023.
