Overview

The Raiders are in the middle of one of the worst streaks any team has had this season, and while their playoff hopes are still technically alive, their season is certainly over. Just four weeks ago they were 6-4 and in the hunt for not just a Wild Card spot, but also the AFC West crown. Since then, they are 0-4 SU and ATS and have only been competitive in one of those four games. In their last four games, they’ve been outscored by 87 points and the offense has mustered just 49 total points.

Because of the last five games, the Raiders now give up the fifth-most points per game and are scoring the ninth-most. They have failed to cover ATS in their last five games which has brought their once respectable 6-3 mark down to 6-8 on the season. Josh Jacobs has been ruled out, as has right tackle Trent Brown, so it is unlikely Oakland will be able to take advantage of a Chargers’ rush defense that is giving up over 100 yards per game.

Meanwhile, the Chargers’ season just keeps getting worse. Last week, they were blown out at home by the Vikings as Philip Rivers continued to struggle. Rivers will look to get back on track this week against a Raiders’ defense that has given up 262.4 passing yards per game. But it hasn’t been the yards that are a problem for the Chargers’ passing attack, it’s the turnovers. They rank fifth in the NFL in passing yards per game with 278.8 but have turned the ball over 29 times, the third-most in the league.

Trends

  • The Raiders are 6-8 ATS this season.
  • The Chargers are 4-8-2 ATS this season.
  • The over and under have both hit seven times this season in Raiders’ games.
  • The total has gone under in eight of the Chargers’ 14 games this season.
  • The Raiders are 0-5 ATS in their last five games.
  • The Chargers are 1-4 ATS in their last five games.
  • The total has gone under in four of the Raiders’ last five games.
  • The Chargers are 1-5 ATS in their last six games at home.

Prop Bet

Raiders under 17.5
The Raiders’ offense has been terrible the last few weeks and a lot of that has to do with Josh Jacobs’ shoulder injury. While there are certainly more problems than that, him being out this week points to a one-dimensional offensive attack that will feature Derek Carr and the passing game. The Chargers’ defense hasn’t been playing well and was decimated by the Vikings last week, but they will want to rub salt in an old rival’s wound as the Raiders’ spiral continues. Expect the Chargers’ defense to smother this offense.

Bottom Line

The Chargers are bad, but the Raiders are done. We always see it happen around this time of the year, teams give up and are already packing it in for the offseason. The Raiders are one of those teams. They’ve shown no fight over the last four weeks and even managed to make a four-point loss look horrible. The Chargers are coming off one of their worst performances ever under Philip Rivers, and the offense will want to make things right if for no other purpose than pride. The Raiders’ defense hasn’t been able to stop anyone, and though the Chargers are bad they have not yet given up. Seven is certainly a large number, especially since the Chargers have done almost nothing impressive all season. Yet, I’m still going with the home team. It might be wise to wait, though, as late money will likely come in on the Raiders now that the spread has hit the key number of 7. You should be able to get this at -6.5 sometime on Saturday. Chargers win big, as the Raiders’ slide continues.

Pick: Chargers -7
