In just three seasons, Baylor head coach Matt Rhule has been able to take his Baylor Bears from a 1-11 season year one to 9-0 and No. 13 in the country. Rhule and his Bears will, however, face their toughest test in his tenure in welcoming in the No. 10 ranked Oklahoma Sooners and one of the most high-powered offensive units in the country. With no official championship game, this game will all but decide the future champion as just one game separates their conference records. In what will also be each team’s toughest remaining test, let’s take a closer look at this matchup of Big 12 elite.

For Baylor, who won seven games last season after an abysmal first year under Rhule, the ascension has been steep as they are now just a few games away from clinching their first Big 12 title since 2013. After trailing much of the game last week against TCU, a game in which both teams failed to score a regulation touchdown, the Bears converted two fourth-quarter field goals to send the game in overtime. From there, chaos ensued, as the Bears and Horned Frogs exchanged five touchdowns in a triple-overtime thriller for the ages. As the Bears’ offense stalled for much of regulation, the defense showed up in a big way, forcing the Horned Frogs into three interceptions while allowing them just 308 yards from scrimmage and consistently buckling down in their own territory. While Baylor has been known for their high-powered offenses, Rhule brought in Phil Snow to run the defense, and he also has turned in results in just three short seasons. Through nine games this season, he has his defensive unit allowing just 19 points and 337.4 yards of total offense per game. The year before Rhule and Snow took over the program, those numbers were 29 and 430.8, respectively.

You won’t find a better offense in all of college football than you will with Lincoln Riley’s high-flying unit. Led by Alabama transfer and Heisman candidate Jalen Hurts, the Sooners are averaging 48.4 points and 587.3 yards per game, leading the FBS in both categories. Just one game removed from their only loss of the season, a road defeat at Kansas State in Week 9, the Sooners had another close call last weekend at home against Iowa State. After taking a 35-14 lead into the half, the Sooners defense let the Cyclones claw back, scoring a game-tying touchdown with 24 seconds remaining in regulation. With little to play for, the Cyclones rolled the dice in going for two but failed the conversion with an errant pass from Brock Purdy. Purdy, an average quarterback by almost every definition of the phrase, had a season-high five touchdowns to go along with 282 yards and zero interceptions against this Oklahoma defense. For a top-10 team, Oklahoma has one of the worst defensive units of the bunch, currently allowing 25 points and 355.1 yards per game.

Bottom Line?

While Baylor’s offense hasn’t exactly been electric to this point in the season, they have posted more than 30 points five times in nine games against better defenses than Oklahoma. On the other side of the ball, while the Bears’ defense has improved vastly over the last two seasons, Snow and his boys have yet to see an offense close to this caliber. Additionally, over the last nine seasons, Oklahoma has cashed the over every single time the game before playing TCU. Guess who they have on deck? Take the over in what should be one of the most fun games to watch this weekend.
