PGA Betting Picks and Guide: WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational (2021)

The PGA Tour returns to its normal schedule this week as the world’s very best are all together again, this time for the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Located in Memphis, TN, a full 14 hours behind Japan, 19 golfers from the Olympics will be teeing it up Thursday in an event that features just 66 of the world’s best with no cut.

With a purse size comparable to that of majors, not only are all the big names here, but they should be plenty motivated to go low. Let’s take a closer look at where the odds have landed.

Course Preview (TPC Southwind)

Located just outside Memphis, TN, Southwind should provide a challenge for these guys as Bermuda rough will be lurking just outside the fairways that will be a bear to get tight shots out of. Water hazards also will be top of mind, as this course features 11 in total.

Putting appears to be of less concern than usual, but the smaller greens (4th smallest on tour) will require an elevated need for accuracy on the approach shots. Most importantly, off-the-tee accuracy is critical as it gives players a chance to strike from the fairway on as many as 11 holes featuring dog legs with trees.

Outright PGA Betting Picks

Paul Casey (+2800 on DraftKings Sportsbook)

A guy that constantly flies under the radar that I think has a chance to go low in this one is Englishman Paul Casey. Coming off a T4 finish at the Olympics, Casey finished T4 at the PGA only to follow up with a T7 at the US Open and is quietly playing some great golf.

Here at TPC Southwinds, in his three starts, he’s yet to put together four great rounds but has shot 69 or lower in four of his last six rounds here.

Taking a look at his recent form from a metrics standpoint: over his last 24 rounds, Casey is 5th in the field in SG: Ball Striking, 5th in GIR: Gained, 2nd in SG: Approach, 1st in Proximity 200+ yards, and 1st in SG: Approach + Proximity.

If Casey can prove jet lag not to be an issue and get off to a strong start Thursday, I like for him to keep the momentum into the weekend and finish near the top of the leaderboard come Sunday.
