PGA Championship 2022: Dustin Johnson Betting Odds, Preview, & Prediction

This week, the second major of 2022 gets underway in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Southern Hills Country Club hosts the 104th annual PGA Championship.

Temperatures have been steamy in Tulsa, but the tournament forecast looks agreeable. Weather.com predicts a high of 89 degrees for Thursday, but temperatures are expected to top out at 82 degrees over the following three days. Other than a chance of scattered thunderstorms on Sunday, the weather is expected to be dry, making for firm, fast conditions. It will be breezy for the tournament, especially on Thursday and Friday, so we could see high scores.

Southern Hills has hosted three U.S. Opens and four PGA Championships. The most recent major to be played here was the 2007 PGA Championship. Tiger Woods finished -8 to beat Woody Austin by two shots in that event.

The course will play as a par 70 at 7,546. Three of the par-3s measure over 200 yards, with the longest topping out at 251 yards. The two par-5s play at 656 and 632 yards. Four of the par-4s are 489 yards or longer. This course is a brute.

Defending PGA champ Phil Mickelson, who topped the field at Kiawah Island last year to become the oldest player to win a major, won’t be playing this week. But it’s still a star-studded field, and Woods expects to play after returning to the Masters last month following a car crash in February 2021.

Dustin Johnson Course History

Given the nature of the late-moment replacement in courses (from Trump National to Southern Hills), Dustin Johnson has never competed at Southern Hills Country Club, as is the same for the vast majority of his competitors. Even if they had competed there, the course was fully redesigned in 2019, so it plays completely differently than before. The last event here was the 2007 PGA Championship, which Tiger Woods won.

Dustin Johnson’s Recent Form

It has been quite the up-and-down beginning of 2022 for the former World Number 1 golfer. With that being said, he has a knack for showing up when the lights are brightest on him at Major events. His rank has fallen from ninth to twelfth since the Masters after inexplicably missing the cut at the Heritage Classic and following that up with coasting near the bottom of the leaderboard to close out Byron Nelson. He was pleased with his first round, in which he shot a five-under 67. However, he acknowledged that he made way too many mistakes in that outing, which led to him falling down the rankings in the event. Johnson is one of the world’s best but has not played as much golf as he usually does at this point in the year, but he knows what he needs to do to place nicely at Southern Hills. Look for DJ to rebound in a big way.

The Pick: Dustin Johnson Top 20 Finish (-115) via FanDuel

Undoubtedly, a ton goes into a golfer’s performance, and focus may just be the most important. The fact that he has become a married man since the last time we have seen him should result in a clear mind. In terms of things relevant to golf, Dustin Johnson is that dude when it comes to Major tournaments. No matter how he has played in between, he has finished top-20 in each of the last three Majors since his extremely surprising missed cut at this event last year. Look for that to be a driving factor to Johnson bringing his best game to Southern Hills and for the results to show just that. There is value in Top Ten at +165, but I would prefer to go with the Top 20 line here as this is one that I can confidently say that the numbers point to having a high chance of hitting.
