PGA Championship 2022: Jon Rahm Betting Odds, Preview, & Prediction

This week, the second major of 2022 gets underway in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Southern Hills Country Club hosts the 104th annual PGA Championship.

Temperatures have been steamy in Tulsa, but the tournament forecast looks agreeable. Weather.com predicts a high of 89 degrees for Thursday, but temperatures are expected to top out at 82 degrees over the following three days. Other than a chance of scattered thunderstorms on Sunday, the weather is expected to be dry, making for firm, fast conditions. It will be breezy for the tournament, especially on Thursday and Friday, so we could see high scores.

Southern Hills has hosted three U.S. Opens and four PGA Championships. The most recent major to be played here was the 2007 PGA Championship. Tiger Woods finished -8 to beat Woody Austin by two shots in that event.

The course will play as a par 70 at 7,546. Three of the par-3s measure over 200 yards, with the longest topping out at 251 yards. The two par-5s play at 656 and 632 yards. Four of the par-4s are 489 yards or longer. This course is a brute.

Defending PGA champ Phil Mickelson, who topped the field at Kiawah Island last year to become the oldest player to win a major, won’t be playing this week. But it’s still a star-studded field, and Woods expects to play after returning to the Masters last month following a car crash in February 2021.

For those interested in betting on the tournament, we have some thoughts on the outlooks for the top players.

Jon Rahm Course History

Rahm has not played the course professionally but recently took two practice rounds at Southern Hills.

Jon Rahm’s Recent Form

Rahm is coming into this tournament as the  No. 2 player in the world and recently won the 2021 U.S. Open. He held onto that top ranking for 42 weeks until losing to Scottie Scheffler at the WGC-Dell Match Play. He finished in the top 10 a whopping 15 times last season, including top-8 finishes in the year’s other three majors. The T27 finish is certainly not what he wanted but after shooting 74, 72, then 77 the first three days, he rebounded on Sunday by shooting 69. He took that momentum into the Mexico Open at Vidanta as he picked up the win.

Jon Rahm PGA Championship Predictions

Rahm comes into this tournament as the co-favorite with Scheffler, but when comparing their approaches, Rahm is the better bet.

Rahm’s coach Dave Phillips believes this big course could play well for him. He comes as the best in strokes gained from tee green at 1.808 and his strokes gained off the tee at 1.311. He’s going to need that power with 12 of the 18 holes being par 4s.

His accuracy has been really good at 64.9% and this course comes with quite a few dog legs, so he will need to stick on the fairways as much as possible.

The roughs are very thick, but Phillips said that it’s one of Rahm’s strong points. The one spot where he could land in some trouble is in the sand. Many of the greens are surrounded by sand traps and his sand save percentage is only 40.3%.

If you are looking for your best bet to be atop the leaderboard this weekend, Rahm is your guy.
