PGA Championship 2022: Jordan Spieth Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

This week, the second major of 2022 gets underway in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Southern Hills Country Club hosts the 104th annual PGA Championship.

Temperatures have been steamy in Tulsa, but the tournament forecast looks agreeable. Weather.com predicts a high of 89 degrees for Thursday, but temperatures are expected to top out at 82 degrees over the following three days. Other than a chance of scattered thunderstorms on Sunday, the weather is expected to be dry, making for firm, fast conditions. It will be breezy for the tournament, especially on Thursday and Friday, so we could see high scores.

Southern Hills has hosted three U.S. Opens and four PGA Championships. The most recent major to be played here was the 2007 PGA Championship. Tiger Woods finished -8 to beat Woody Austin by two shots in that event.

The course will play as a par 70 at 7,546. Three of the par-3s measure over 200 yards, with the longest topping out at 251 yards. The two par-5s play at 656 and 632 yards. Four of the par-4s are 489 yards or longer. This course is a brute.

Defending PGA champ Phil Mickelson, who topped the field at Kiawah Island last year to become the oldest player to win a major, won’t be playing this week. But it’s still a star-studded field, and Woods expects to play after returning to the Masters last month following a car crash in February 2021.

For those interested in betting on the tournament, we have some thoughts on the outlooks for the top players.

Jordan Spieth Course History

Jordan Speith only played once at Southern Hills before this year, back in 2009, when he competed in a U.S. Amateur Championship. However, the course has gone through a renovation since. Spieth and Justin Thomas played a practice round back on May 10, and he feels great going into this tournament.

“I think it’s going to be a really firm and fast PGA, and it’s going to be one of the higher-scoring PGAs that we have seen,” he said. “It was a great test. I really enjoyed playing it.”

This could be a good sign with Speith’s confidence in that practice round.

Jordan Spieth Recent Form

Jordan Spieth burst onto the scene back in 2015 when he began the season by winning The Masters, then capped it by winning the U.S. Open. Spieth is coming into this tournament struggling in majors as of recent. You would think it couldn’t get any worse after consecutive T35 place finishes at the World Golf Championships and Valero Texas Open, which included an embarrassing three-putt from inside of three feet. Well, think again.

He would go on to miss the cut at the Masters this year, and it would be the second consecutive cut he missed in a major (2021 U.S. Open). He has now finished inside the top 20 in just four of his last 12 majors.

He is coming into this tournament in better form as he’s won the RBC Heritage a week after the Masters and was the runner-up in the AT&T Byron Nelson last week. He didn’t win that tournament, he played great, but K.H. Lee had a fantastic final day shooting 63 to charge up the leaderboard.

Jordan Spieth PGA Championship Predictions

One of the important notes going into the weekend is that Speith will be on his sixth attempt at the career grand slam with a PGA Championship win. With his recent struggles in majors, you have to wonder if that pressure of the grand slam is playing a part.

You have to love how highly Speith spoke about the course. â€œThe golf course was fantastic,” he said, “I loved it.”

Speith’s power will play well on this course as his driving distance of 307.5 yards is 33rd, and his 1.277 strokes gained from tee to green is 12th. It will be his approach to staying out of the rough with the doglegs and his use with the irons that will be important. Then you have to consider his putting, as that has been a nightmare for him all season.

His love for this course is a headline going into this tournament, and you have to like it when someone has confidence going into a tournament. You look at how well he’s played since The Masters, and this could be grand salami time for Speith.
