PGA Championship 2022: Justin Thomas Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

The second major of 2022 gets underway this week in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Southern Hills Country Club will host the 104th annual PGA Championship.

Temperatures have been steamy in Tulsa, but the tournament forecast looks agreeable. Weather.com is predicting a high of 89 degrees for Thursday, but then temperatures are expected to top out at 82 degrees over the following three days. Other than a chance of scattered thunderstorms on Sunday, the weather is expected to be dry, which should make for firm, fast conditions. It’s going to be breezy for the tournament, especially on Thursday and Friday, so we could see high scores.

Southern Hills has hosted three U.S. Opens and four PGA Championships. The most recent major to be played here was the 2007 PGA Championship. Tiger Woods finished -8 in that event to beat Woody Austin by two shots.

The course will play as a par 70 at 7,546. Three of the par-3s measure over 200 yards, with the longest topping out at 251 yards. The two par-5s play at 656 and 632 yards. Four of the par-4s are 489 yards or longer. This course is a brute.

Defending PGA champ Phil Mickelson, who topped the field at Kiawah Island last year to become the oldest player to win a major, won’t be playing this week. But it’s still a star-studded field, and Woods is expected to play after his making his return at the Masters last month following a car crash in February 2021.

For those interested in betting the tournament, we have some thoughts on the outlooks for the top players.

Justin Thomas Course History

The 2017 PGA Champion, Justin Thomas, has never played a professional round of golf at Southern Hills Country Club in his young career. However, Thomas played a practice round at the course on May 9 with Jordan Spieth, but it’s unsure if there was a final score recorded for the round. He did mention in a tweet that he had a fun walk around the course and that it was an “awesome” course.

Justin Thomas Recent Form

Thomas has played in eight events so far during the calendar year of 2022 with his best finish being third at the Valspar Championship back in the middle of March. He built on the top-10 outing by finishing eighth overall at The Masters Tournament a couple of weeks later. Most recently, the 29-year-old finished 35th at the RBC Heritage tournament at Harbour Town Golf Links on April 17, posting a six-under-par.

Dating back to November of 2021, Thomas has four top-five finishes to his resume and three more top-10 outings. Justin Thomas is trending in the right direction and continues to prove why he’s a top-10 player in the world. He’ll be looking to add a second Major Championship to his collection this weekend as he keeps fine-tuning his game heading into the tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Justin Thomas PGA Championship Prediction

The Pick: Justin Thomas to Win (+1600 via PointsBet)

Justin Thomas enters the PGA Championship with the fourth-lowest odds to win the tournament this weekend at Southern Hills, trailing just Scottie Scheffler (+1200), Jon Rahm (+1200), and Rory McIlroy (+1400). Thomas won the tournament back in its 2017 edition at Quail Hollow Club in his breakout year on the tour. Since then, there have been some ups and downs for Thomas, but he has rightfully reclaimed a spot in the top 10. The 29-year-old has been in great form recently and in my opinion, he’s ready to make a run at another Major this weekend.

What I like most about Thomas heading into this weekend is that he has the recent practice round at Southern Hills Country Club under his belt. Getting into Tulsa a week and a half early to check out the uniqueness of the recently redesigned course will be a major advantage. Sure, his opponents will have a week to get accustomed to the course in the days leading up to Thursday’s opening round, but the act shows the initiative that you like to see when backing a player heading into a tournament. I like Thomas to earn another top-10 performance this weekend and I think it’s worth a shot to take him at 16/1 to win the tournament outright.
