PGA Championship 2022: Scottie Scheffler Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

The second major of 2022 gets underway this week in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Southern Hills Country Club will host the 104th annual PGA Championship.

Temperatures have been steamy in Tulsa, but the tournament forecast looks agreeable. Weather.com is predicting a high of 89 degrees for Thursday, but then temperatures are expected to top out at 82 degrees over the following three days. Other than a chance of scattered thunderstorms on Sunday, the weather is expected to be dry, which should make for firm, fast conditions. It’s going to be breezy for the tournament, especially on Thursday and Friday, so we could see high scores.

Southern Hills has hosted three U.S. Opens and four PGA Championships. The most recent major to be played here was the 2007 PGA Championship. Tiger Woods finished -8 in that event to beat Woody Austin by two shots.

The course will play as a par 70 at 7,546. Three of the par-3s measure over 200 yards, with the longest topping out at 251 yards. The two par-5s play at 656 and 632 yards. Four of the par-4s are 489 yards or longer. This course is a brute.

Defending PGA champ Phil Mickelson, who topped the field at Kiawah Island last year to become the oldest player to win a major, won’t be playing this week. But it’s still a star-studded field, and Woods is expected to play after his making his return at the Masters last month following a car crash in February 2021.

For those interested in betting the tournament, we have some thoughts on the outlooks for the top players.

Scottie Scheffler Course History

Like many of the younger golfers on tour, Scottie Scheffler hasn’t played at Southern Hills Country Club in any professional capacity. Although, the former Longhorn played and won the 2015 Big 12 Individual Title at Southern Hills while playing at Texas as an 18-year-old.

It is worth mentioning that the course went through renovations in 2019, so it has a bit of a different look to it. But, the changes don’t appear to affect Scheffler, considering he played a practice round at Southern Hills on May 5 and shot a 64 (-6). Incredible. That’s the only word to describe Scheffler’s form right now.

Scottie Scheffler Recent Form

There is nobody hotter in the golf world right now than Scheffler. The 25-year-old rising star is fresh off of a Masters Tournament win in April, adding his first Major Championship to his resume. The amazing part about the win at Augusta is that it wasn’t even a sweat for Scheffler, considering he won by three strokes over Rory McIlroy (and double-bogeyed the final hole).

The success doesn’t begin there for the Texas native. He won both the Arnold Palmer Invitational on March 3 of this year and the WM Phoenix Open the month prior. It has been a legendary run by Scheffler since November, notching three other top-five finishes to go along with the three victories.

The Pick: Scottie Scheffler to Win (+1200 via PointsBet)

I’ll say it again; there is nobody hotter than Scheffler in the game of golf right now. With how Scheffler is playing, I can’t find a reason not to back him at 12/1 this weekend. While it’s a relatively simple philosophy when betting golf, I like to compare course history with current form before making a pick. Scheffler doesn’t just meet the requirements for the strategy, he destroys the criteria in a landslide.

As I mentioned, starting with the course history, not many players on tour have played at Southern Hills. Scheffler played there during his collegiate days, and he won the individual title in 2015. He also turned in a great practice round last week, which makes me confident that he feels comfortable on the course and is ready to compete for another title. And when it comes to his form, Scheffler is on another planet right now compared to his competition. The fairways must look as wide as a soccer pitch, and the hole must look like a basketball hoop when Scheffler makes it to the green. He is the favorite for a reason, and I will be backing Scheffler to win at +1200 this weekend in Tulsa.
