PGA Championship: PGA Best Weekend Picks (2024)

Xander Schauffele’s dominance has continued during the first two rounds of play at the 2024 PGA Championship. Despite blowing a lead against Rory McIlroy at the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday, Schauffele went on a blistering run to wind up bogey-free and 9-under-par on Thursday. Friday’s round wasn’t quite as dynamic but he still only had one bogey on his scorecard, turning in a 3-under-par outing to hold a one-stroke lead over Collin Morikawa.

Scottie Scheffler’s whirlwind week began with holing an eagle on his first hole, followed by other off-the-course drama early Friday morning that did little to slow his momentum. By the end of the second round, Scheffler recorded 5-under-par, finishing one stroke better than he did on Thursday.

Sahith Theegala and Thomas Detry’s leaderboard ascension may come as a surprise, but 2020 PGA Championship winner, Collin Morikawa, has been red-hot, finishing 66-65 to sit only one stroke behind Schauffele heading into moving day on Saturday. Other notable performers include Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau, and Austin Eckroat.

Scottie Scheffler (+320)

There’s simply no way to pass on Scheffler sitting at +320 odds behind Schauffele in the outright winner market. After bogeying the second hole on Friday, the World No. 1 made five more birdies and played a clean game at Valhalla.

The length of this course, combined with his accuracy approaching the greens, makes Scheffler a great investment as the second betting favorite behind Schauffele, despite still sitting three strokes back at 9-under-par. Let’s stake a 0.50 unit wager on Scheffler to win his third consecutive event and a second straight major title, which would be his first victory at a PGA Championship event.

Collin Morikawa (+500)

Collin Morikawa looked great at the first major during The Masters and he’s once again showing us why he was able to wind up with the 2020 PGA Championship outright win at TPC Harding Park in 2020.

Ranked 29th strokes gained: off-the-tee and 43rd strokes gained: around-the-green, we’re seeing Morikawa look sharp after starting 2-over-par during his first five holes on Thursday. Since then, he’s drained 14 birdies and just one bogey, making +500 great value to obtain heading into the weekend. A 0.50 unit wager is sufficient to place on Morikawa.

Viktor Hovland (+2000)

After winning the FedExCup, with back-to-back wins at the BMW Championship and Tour Championship, we’ve all ignored Viktor Hovland due to his slow start in 2024. It’s been ugly at times, but the Norwegian native has bounced back to start the first two rounds at Valhalla.

We haven’t even seen a top-ten finish from Hovland in seven events, including a missed cut at Augusta National. However, the way he’s striping it off the tee and sinking putts, sitting at T8 on the leaderboard at 8-under-par is too good to pass up at 20-1. Let’s stake a 0.25 unit wager on Hovland to keep the momentum going during the final two rounds to wind up with his first PGA Championship win.
