The PGA Tour continues its California swing this week as Torrey Pines just outside of San Diego, CA plays host to the Farmers Insurance Open. Getting started on Wednesday and ending Saturday to avoid competing with the NFL, this field will be one of the most stacked non-Major events of the season with some of the Tour’s best headlining it.

Course Preview (Torrey Pines North & South)

The first and second rounds will be split across the North & South course, with the third and fourth taking place on the more difficult South Course. For success in this tournament, almost all winners go super low on the North Course to set themselves up for prime positioning come the weekend.

The South course, however, is where the money is made, as the 7,765-yard behemoth requires players to be both accurate and long off the tee. With most approach shots coming in at more than 175 yards, that’s one of a few relevant metrics we’ll be looking at in this one as we try to identify a winner.

Outright Betting Picks

Tony Finau (+2500 on DraftKings Sportsbook)

“Always the bridesmaid never the bride” is a term that often comes to mind whenever Finau is talked about amongst golf’s elite. Well if there was ever a place for him to take a step towards shaking that, it’s here at Torrey Pines.

Finishing T2 here last year, Finau has finished T6 or higher in four of his five laps here, making the cut in all five and never finishing worse than 25th. After a slow start last week, he battled back over the weekend shooting a 67 and 69, and was a slow Thursday away from landing in in the top 20.

As for his relevant metrics, Finau is in the top 25% of the field this week in Driving Distance and Approach Shots 175+, two key stats that are critical for success here on the South Course.

I like for Finao to go low in this one and be in contention come Saturday afternoon.
