The train wreck that is the NFC East will face off for one of the last times of the 2019 campaign on Sunday when the 6-7 Philadephia Eagles travel to our national capital to take on a sputtering Washington team. For the Eagles, things have not gone exactly as planned in Carson Wentz’s first full season back healthy, yet they still find themselves tied for the division lead with the equally sad Dallas Cowboys. On the other side of this matchup, things have gone completely off the rails for Washington, who after starting 0-5 canned fifth-year head coach Jay Gruden and began starting their rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Let’s take a deeper look at this matchup in DC to see where we can spot an edge.

Overview
After losing three straight in Week 11 through 13, the Eagles’ season appeared to be on the brink Monday night when they went down 17-3 to the Eli Manning-led Giants at the half. That’s when Wentz and company led a second-half comeback that ended 23-17 in overtime to keep their playoff chances alive as Dallas lost their third straight a day earlier. Since starting the season with a win against this Washington team, inconsistency and injuries have riddled this Eagles team, having failed to put together a string of three or more wins all season long. In Monday night’s comeback win, Wentz turned in his best performance of the season which included 325 yards and a QB rating of 97.5.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a bigger dumpster fire in the NFL this season than Washington. With a quarterback in place that seemingly was hand-selected by a power-hungry owner, Washington has trotted out the rookie Haskins clearly far too soon. Through 13 games, Washington ranks dead last in the league in points (14.5), passing yards (161.3), and total offensive yards (262.4) per game. With running back Adrian Peterson back in the mix, however, Washington has shown signs of being formidable, winning two of their past three against the sinking Panthers and Lions.
Trends
- Washington is 1-6 ATS in their last seven versus the NFC East
- The Favorite is 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings
- The Under is 7-1 in the Eagles last eight games following a straight-up win
- The Under is 6-1 in Eagles last seven versus a team with a losing record
- The Under is 7-1 in Washington’s last eight games as an underdog
- The Under is 7-3 in Washington’s last 10 home games versus a team with a losing road record
Bottom Line
The NFC East has been especially difficult to watch for years now, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t value to be had from a betting perspective. While the Eagles are certainly better on paper and were able to end a three-game slide last week, they have largely been playing a disorganized, uninspired brand of football that even when bad, you don’t typically see from this franchise. These two teams are a combined 11-15 to the under this season, and even though we’ve lost a point so far this week, I still like both of these offenses to struggle to move the ball and put up points.
