Philadelphia Eagles vs. Green Bay Packers Odds and Game Pick (2020)

The Philadelphia Eagles are part of one of the weirdest NFL seasons in recent memory – not just because a global pandemic has removed 90 percent or more of fans from stadiums at games this season, but because the NFC East is on pace to set a remarkable record in all the worst ways and for all the worst reasons. There has never been a division champion in the Super Bowl era (since the 1966 season), which has won only five games, but the Eagles could be that team if they finish 5-10-1. The Eagles are 3-7-1 after 11 games, and yet they are just half a game out of first place, behind the New York Giants and the Washington Football Team. The Eagles are in the thick of the division title hunt despite having a record, which, objectively, should have them in the top 10 of the NFL draft picking order. It’s crazy, but that’s the scenario. If the Eagles can upset the Green Bay Packers this Sunday, they will probably be in first place since the Giants and Washington play very tough games they are unlikely to win.

Overview

The Eagles are simply not getting good performances from quarterback Carson Wentz. It’s striking to see Wentz struggle, given how brilliant he was in Philadelphia’s first two seasons. Wentz flourished at the start of his NFL career, but ever since he suffered a major injury, he hasn’t been the same player on the other side of his rehabilitation and injury. The Eagles have lost three starting offensive linemen this season, and that has certainly been a big reason the Philadelphia offense has been so anemic this year. Still, it’s not just about the wounded offensive line. Philadelphia head coach Doug Pederson has not developed Wentz very well, leading many people in the Eagles organization to think that former offensive coordinator Frank Reich was the real reason Wentz played so well. Pederson is under fire and could soon lose his job despite being the man who gave the Eagles their first Super Bowl title.

The Green Bay Packers thrived in their most recent game, a 41-25 win over the Chicago Bears in which they led 41-10 after three quarters and then coasted to the finish line. Aaron Rodgers always keeps the Packers in the upper echelon of NFL teams. Comparing him to Carson Wentz is a mismatch of epic proportions. Wentz beat the Packers and Rodgers last year in Lambeau Field, but Wentz is a far worse quarterback than he was a year ago, and the Eagles’ offensive line is a lot more banged up now than it was early in the 2019 season. Green Bay has a strong pass rush. The Packers sacked the Bears’ Mitchell Trubisky three times this past weekend and forced three fumbles. They should be able to do similar damage against the Eagles’ hollowed-out offensive line.

Trends

  • The Eagles are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games on grass.
  • The Eagles are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games versus the NFC.
  • The Packers are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games versus the NFC.

Bottom Line

The Eagles’ offense can’t finish drives, and the Packers have an elite quarterback who shows no real signs of slowing down. The Packers have banged-up receivers, but that’s their only especially glaring weakness against an Eagle team, which doesn’t match up well at most positions. The only thing that could potentially change this game in the Eagles’ favor is the Philadelphia secondary outworking the backup Green Bay receivers and getting interceptions, which result from weak receiver play, not anything Aaron Rodgers does.

It’s hard to make the case that’s going to happen on Sunday. The Packers know they have to play better with the playoffs just around the corner. They have a hefty advantage over the Eagles here.

Pick: Packers -8.5
