Overview

The Eagles have had an interesting start to the 2019 season. They struggled in their first three games, barely escaping against Washington in Week 1 before falling to Atlanta and Detroit in back to back weeks. They then rebounded to knock off the Packers in Green Bay on Thursday Night Football. Last week, they took care of business against the Jets, but the offense still struggled, getting a lot of help from their defense in the win. So who are the Eagles? Are they a team that can compete for a Super Bowl like so many people thought coming into the season, or are they a middling team that is going to play around .500 all year.

The key matchup of the game could come down to the Eagles’ run defense versus Dalvin Cook. The Eagles are giving up just 63 yards per game on the ground but will be tested this week against Cook who comes into the game as the second-leading rusher in the NFL. On the other side of the ball, the offense led by Carson Wentz has been afflicted with injuries so far this season and ranks in the bottom 10 of the league in yards per game.

The Vikings are coming off a get-right game where they were able to dominate the New York Giants, and Kirk Cousins was able to take advantage of their weak secondary to have his best game of the season. So far this year, Minnesota has beaten the teams they should beat, the Falcons, Raiders, and Giants, but have lost two key divisional matchups against teams equal to their caliber of talent, at Chicago and at Green Bay. The Eagles fall into the latter category.

Dalvin Cook has been sensational this season but will have to find running room against one of the best run defenses in the NFL. Two weeks ago against the Bears, he managed only 35 yards on 14 carries. If the Vikings are going to have success this week, they will need Cook to play well and take some of the pressure off of Cousins.

Trends

  • The Eagles are 2-3 ATS this season.
  • The Vikings are 3-2 ATS this season.
  • The Eagles are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games.
  • The total has gone under in six of Minnesota’s last seven games.
  • The Eagles are 7-3 SU in their last 10 games.
  • The Vikings are 8-1 SU in their last nine games played in October.

Prop Bet

Highest Scoring Half – Second Half (-103)
PointsBet has this bet listed, and it’s really interesting. Both teams have gotten out to slow starts this season, and in the second half the field should open up and both teams should be able to move the ball against worn-down defenses. This is a game that could be 10-7 at half but end up 24-21.

Bottom Line

The Eagles’ offense hasn’t looked great this season, and they have started slow in most games. Their run defense should make things difficult for Dalvin Cook, but I don’t see them jumping out to an early lead which will give Minnesota’s offense time to get Cook going. Kirk Cousins needs to play like he did last week and not turn the ball over, which would give Carson Wentz short fields. Ultimately, the Vikings’ defense should be able to fluster Wentz, and without the threat of a run game, I expect them to be able to predict plays before they happen. This is a huge game for both teams, but one that should start to make clear the hierarchy of the NFC.

Pick: Vikings -3 (-110)
