Premier League Matchday 2 Preview & Best Bets (2025)
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Manchester City (-205) vs. Tottenham (+475), DRAW (+380) | O/U 3.5 (+120/-150)
Let's pick it up on Saturday morning, where a couple of unbeaten teams will square off. Manchester City sits atop the table at 1-0-0 with a +4 goal differential, while Tottenham boasts the same record and ranks third on goal differential (+3). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. ET from Etihad Stadium in Manchester.
I'll take a +120 flier to say this contest goes over 3.5 goals. These are two of the more potent offenses in the league, which was exemplified in matchday one when they combined for seven goals. For City, it was a 4-0 decimation of Wolverhampton. The Lilywhites smashed Burnley in a 3-0 match.
After an injury-plagued 2024-25 and simply underwhelming play, this Manchester City team is back to being the juggernaut that we've become accustomed to for years. They have the third-shortest price to win the title (+275), and I expect Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku, Bernardo Silva, and Co. to keep things rolling this weekend. Both of these clubs averaged 1.7 goals per match last season, and that'll roughly be the mark that we need to hit at the Etihad on Saturday. I think it's doable, and I'm expecting a 3-1 or 2-2 contest.
Pick: Over 3.5 Goals (+120)
Crystal Palace (+140) vs. Nottingham Forest (+210), DRAW (+220) | 2.5 (+105/-130)
Nottingham Forest cruised past Brentford in a 3-1 affair last weekend, and they'll try to stay perfect when they take on Crystal Palace on the road. Palace pulled out a 0-0 road draw against Chelsea in their PL opener. This contest kicks off on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. ET from Selhurst Park in London.
The Eagles, who are coming off of a year where they won the FA Cup (1-0 vs. Manchester City), look to be in great form to start the season. They also just beat Liverpool 2-2 (3-2 PEN) to win the FA Community Shield on August 10. Following that match, Palace has posted consecutive clean sheets against Chelsea (0-0) in the PL and Fredrikstad (1-0) in a UEFA Conference League Qualifying match. It's safe to say that their defense is dialed in at the moment.
As for Nottingham Forest, they found themselves in a high-scoring 3-1 victory over Brentford last weekend. However, I think things will settle down when they take on a more stable defense. Forest was one of the best defenses in the league last season, ranking second in Clean Sheets (13) and sixth in Goals Against (46). Their offense has typically taken a step back when going on the road in recent years, averaging 1.4 goals per match in their last two seasons in the Premier League. I'll play the Under in this one.
Pick: Under 2.5 Goals (-130)
Newcastle United (+220) vs. Liverpool (+105), DRAW (+280) | O/U 3.5 (+130/-175)
The matchday wraps up on Monday afternoon with a marquee clash between Newcastle and Liverpool. The reigning champions got the new campaign started with a 4-2 barnburning victory against Bournemouth. Up next are the Magpies, who posted a 0-0 road draw against Aston Villa last weekend. The matchday finale is set for 3:00 p.m. ET from St. James' Park in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
It has been pure domination in favor of Liverpool when these teams have met recently. In their last eight Premier League showdowns, Liverpool is an impressive 7-1-0 against Newcastle United. The reigning champs finished last season 25-9-4 overall, which includes beating the Magpies once at home (2-0) and drawing on the road (3-3).
Liverpool is running it back with a similar cast of stars under Coach Arne Slot this year. They appear to be in tremendous form once again, as they tallied four goals against Bournemouth in the opener. They have the offensive firepower to cruise past Newcastle, and I also believe that they're more refined on the defensive side. Give me the Reds at plus-money on the road.
Pick: Liverpool Moneyline (+105)
