Rocket Mortgage Classic: Best Longshot Odds & Picks (2022)

With the 3M Open now in the rearview mirror, we look forward to this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, Michigan. For the fourth straight year since the tournament’s inauguration, the Detroit Golf Club’s North Course will host this event.

Detroit Golf Club is a par 72, 7,370-yard track. The previous three winners have shown us that the most important indicators of success at this tournament are a strong iron game and a confident putter.

Amongst their respective fields, the three previous winners of this tournament ranked an average of fourth in SG Tee to Green and eighth in SG Putting. Those two averages are the highest placements out of all metrics.

Below, I will give out my best longshot to win the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Follow me on Twitter to get all of my plays on days without full write-ups.

C.T. Pan (+8000): 0.11u

At 80/1, C.T. Pan is worth taking a shot on to win his second career PGA TOUR event. I believe that this number is more inflated than It should be due to the fact that Pan missed the cut in his one career appearance at this course in 2020.

That being said, this course has only been on TOUR for three seasons and there are many golfers in this field who have just missed one cut here or have never even played at Detroit Golf Club. Additionally, this missed cut does not concern me too much as last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic Winner, Cameron Davis, missed the cut in each of his previous two appearances at Detroit Golf Club.

Both of the previous winners before Davis – Bryson DeChambeau and Nate Lashley – won in their first appearances at Detroit Golf Club. Another reason why I believe that this number is too inflated is due to the fact that Pan has not won a TOUR event since the 2018-19 season.

However, Pan is an extremely consistent golfer and is almost always a safe bet to make the cut. Over his last 10 tournaments, Pan has made the cut nine times.

When playing in watered-down fields, such as the field this week, Pan has been knocking on the doorstep. We saw this with Pan’s ninth-place finish at The Genesis Invitational and sixth-place finish at the Fortinet Championship.

Since this field is so thin in terms of “top talent”, there are only about 10-15 golfers who rank inside the top 100 on TOUR this season in both SG Putting and SG Tee to Green. One of these golfers is Pan, who ranks 81st in SG Putting and 56th in SG Tee to Green.

Pan checks all the boxes for me in terms of possible candidates to win at this course, and at 80/1, it is certainly worth a small wager.

Other Outright Winner Plays:

  • Max Homa (22/1): 0.22u
  • Keegan Bradley (33/1): 0.20u
  • Adam Hadwin (40/1): 0.18u
  • Scott Stallings (50/1): 0.16u
  • Matt Kuchar (66/1): 0.13u

Best of luck!
