RSM Classic Betting Guide (PGA)

In dominating fashion, Dustin Johnson (10/1) won his first green jacket after a brilliant week at Augusta National. Johnson fired rounds of 65-70-65-68 to finish at 20-under-par and win the tournament by five strokes. His final score of 268 was the lowest score ever recorded at the Masters and the second-lowest recorded at a Major. It was a truly special week for D.J., who was the first number one ranked player in the world to win the Masters since Tiger Woods.

The PGA Tour will now make its annual stop on the coast of Georgia for the RSM Classic. Just a short four hour trip from Augusta National, the RSM Classic features a stronger field than usual. Played at the Sea Island Resort, golfers will once again begin each round playing on either the Seaside Course or the Plantation Course. After the cuts are made on Friday, the remaining 36 holes will be played on strictly the Seaside Course.

Last year’s runner-up, Webb Simpson, headlines the field. Sungjae Im, fresh off a T2 at the Masters, w

ill look to improve on his T37 here last season. Englishmen, Tommy Fleetwood, and Tyrrell Hatton, will be making their tournament debuts. Other notable names include Jason Day, Louis Oosthuizen, and Shane Lowry. Joaquin Niemann will be teeing it up after covering from the coronavirus. Here are the past five winners of the event:

  • 2019 Tyler Duncan (-19)
  • 2018 Charles Howell III (-19)
  • 2017 Austin Cook (-21)
  • 2016 Mackenzie Hughes (-17)
  • 2015 Kevin Kisner (-22)

Course Preview

The RSM Classic is played at two different golf courses. The Seaside Course measures just over 7,000 yards and plays as a par 70. It plays slightly more difficult than the Plantation course because it is on the coast and is subject to more wind. The Plantation course plays as a par 72, but it is very similar in length. After Friday’s cut, the rest of the tournament will be played on the Seaside Course, so we will focus on key features of this particular track. There are eight par 4s that measure between 400-450 yards on Seaside. Approach shots from 100-150 will be crucial this week.

Key Stats

  • Strokes Gained: Approach
  • Par 4 Scoring (400-450 yards)
  • Opportunities Gained
  • Performance on Bermuda Greens

Best Bets to Win

Webb Simpson (+1100)
Simpson has a second and a third-place finish at this event in his last two outings. He played very well at Augusta, finishing T10 on the week. He truly is the class of this field and his record over the past year backs it up. Simpson hasn’t finished worse than T17 in his last eight events dating back to August. When sorting the field by performance on Bermuda courses that are less than 7,200 yards, Simpson ranks first in strokes gained tee-to-green, and strokes gained-approach, over the past 36 rounds.

Russell Henley (+2600)
With four straight top-30 finishes to begin his season, Henley is trending very nicely. He has a T3 at the CJ Cup and a T4 at a stacked Zozo Championship field. Henley has a T6 and a T10 at the event, so he knows his way around each course. Over the past 36 rounds, Henley ranks first in the field in both strokes gained: tee-to-green, and strokes gained: approach.

Best Top-10 Bets

Kevin Kisner (+450)
Short Bermuda courses are Kisner’s forte. It’s no surprise he has had a win, a T4, and a T7 here in his last five times out. Kisner performs excellently on Par 4s between 350-400 yards. He is accurate off the tee and very solid with his wedges. Kisner had a T14 at the Zozo Championship a few weeks ago.

Austin Cook (+850)
Another player with both strong recent form and good course history, Austin Cook checks a lot of boxes. The winner of this event in 2017 just had a runner-up finish the Shriners and followed it up with a respectable T24 at the Houston Open. He is a very streaky golfer and must be played while the form is hot.
