Overview
While the Aztecs may be unbeaten, not all unbeaten are made the same as I believe we will soon learn. With a home win over Utah (33-31) being their biggest win to date, they’ve beaten up on the likes of New Mexico State and Towson before last week’s win vs. MW foe New Mexico.
At the quarterback position, the Aztecs have been anything but consistent, as their passing game has struggled mightily ranking near the bottom of the country. QB Jordon Brookshire is more of a runner than a passer, as he’s completed less than 50% of his passes in the three games he’s played while throwing for just 389 yards.
For the Spartans, the bottom has fallen out since losing QB Nick Starkel three weeks ago, as they have lost two of three and lost all the momentum from what was a breakout 2020. Ranking near the bottom of the country in total offense, the Spartans have failed to establish much of a run game as they are averaging just 107 yards on the ground per game.
Turnovers, however, have been the biggest of the issues for the Spartans, as they have a -10 differential which puts them #128 in the country to this point in the season.

Bottom Line
While this sinking total indicates just how bad of a game this might be, the skeleton is still there from an SJSU team who was amongst the best in the Mountainwest just six months ago. Even if Starkel can return at 60%, his return should spark an offense that is currently highlighted by tight end Derrick Deese Jr. who is quietly one of the best weapons in the conference; when he sees the ball.
