San Francisco 49ers at New Orleans Saints Odds and Game Pick (2020)

With the 2020 NFL season now past the halfway point, the pretenders and contenders are starting to emerge in the NFC. In the case of the San Francisco 49ers, injuries have plagued their season worse than COVID-19 itself to this point. As of now, starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could already be done for the season with a high ankle sprain as their receiving core has faced a host of injuries itself.

On the other side of this matchup, a slow start for the Saints has been followed up by five straight wins and a pace that’s starting live up to pre-season expectations.

Do the Saint’s smell blood in the water in a 49ers team on the ropes? Let’s take a closer look.

Overview

With Garoppolo and star tight end George Kittle now out for what increasingly looks like the end of the seaosn, the 49ers have turned to 3rd-year quarterback Nick Mullens to try to guide them through a now crowded NFC West. While he has shown flashes, Mullens has largely struggled to find consistency, stumbling to just a 4:3 touchdown to interception ratio over his last three games.

On the defensive side of the ball, this San Francisco unit has largely helped this team stay afloat. Through nine games, the 49ers have allowed just 325.7 and 23 points per game.

For the Saints, a 1-2 has been followed up with four straight victories in which they’ve averaged over 30 points per game. Their last time on the field put the NFC officially on notice with a 38-3 win on the road in Tampa where their offense looked nearly flawless.

Trends

  • The Saints are 5-1 ATS in their last six against teams with a losing record
  • The 49ers are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games away from home
  • The Over is 7-1-1 ATS in the Saints vs. 49ers last nine games

Prop Bet

Money Line / Alternate Total Points Parlay 1 – Saints to Win & Over 57.5 Points (+350)
Though they’ve certainly struggled to find consistency, the 49ers haven’t had too much of an issue putting up points. Scoring 24 or more in three of their last four, I expect more of the same here and for the Saints to score in the 30s yet again.

Bottom Line

As the 49ers continue to be plagued by injury, the Saints are trending in the opposite direction as they were able to get Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders back in the mix last week in Tampa.

Those reps should only increase this week, and as the Saints feel the Packers and Seahawks on their heels, look for them to continue to push to run teams off the field.

Pick: New Orleans Saints -9.5
