The 49ers are brimming with confidence after a 31-3 beatdown against the Brown on Monday Night Football last week. With that victory, San Francisco remains undefeated at 4-0 while representing the current leader of the NFC West division. Some will be quick to criticize the 49ers’ level of competition up to this point, but a 17.5-point average margin of victory against the Buccaneers, Bengals, Steelers, and Browns seems like more than a fluke. We’ll figure out if San Francisco is for real while facing the Rams in their first divisional game of the season.

On the flip side, the Rams aren’t exactly playing their best football at the moment. They were inexplicably trounced by the Buccaneers in the Coliseum 55-40 in Week 4 before losing a heartbreaker 30-29 at Seattle last Thursday. The Rams have had some extra time to heal and prepare for this divisional clash, while the 49ers are playing on an abbreviated week.

Overview

It goes without saying that the Rams are struggling defensively. Both Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson have had no problem carving them up in recent weeks, and San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garroppolo will look to exploit that weakness. A balanced rushing attack will help him out, as the 49ers currently lead the NFL with 200 yards per game.

Can the Rams solve their recent problems with a few extra days to prepare? The offensive line has been under heavy criticism over the past two weeks, and facing a legitimate 49ers’ pass rush represents a tough spot to right the ship. As far as injuries go, it appears that running back Todd Gurley and linebacker Clay Matthews are highly questionable to play for Los Angeles.

Trends

  • The 49ers are 9-6 ATS as road underdogs over the last two years.
  • The Rams are 12-7 to the over at home through the last two years.
  • The Rams are 7-1 ATS with rest advantage over the last two years.

Prop Bets

Marquise Goodwin OVER 41 Receiving Yards
As mentioned numerous times in this article, the Rams’ secondary has gotten shredded over the past few weeks. That presents an opportunity for the San Francisco pass catchers to rack up some serious yardage on Sunday afternoon. George Kittle is the top target, and the 49ers have somewhat of a “receiver by committee” approach after that. However, Marquise Goodwin is a big-play receiver with a 70% snap rate who should be able to top this over/under. Sure, he will run some of his routes against cornerback Aqib Talib, but the former star corner has been very mediocre this season.

Bottom Line

I’m buying into the 49ers here. They are a well-rounded team with the ability to get the job done in every facet of the game. Unlike the Rams, they seemingly have no glaring weaknesses. We’ll learn more about San Francisco in this challenging road contest, but I believe they have a strong chance at winning outright. Be sure to jump on this spread at +3.5 for good measure.
