Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers Odds & Game Pick

The Green Bay Packers went 13-3 in the 2019 regular season, managing to win several games in which they didn’t play all that well. That includes a surprisingly shaky outing in Week 17 when they barely beat the injury-riddled Detroit Lions in overtime. The Packers were able to win a tiebreaker against the New Orleans Saints to earn the second seed in the NFC Playoffs and get a Wild Card bye, and that proved to be huge, as New Orleans lost to the Minnesota Vikings. Because the Saints lost, the Seahawks — who may have expected to face the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional playoff round — will instead go to Green Bay, while the Vikings travel to San Francisco.

The Packers started as a four-point favorite and are still favored by that much. Will they cover and move within one win of the Super Bowl?

Overview

The Seahawks lost their final two games of the regular season to miss out on a Wild Card bye. They defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on Wild Card Weekend, but they did not look all that crisp. They scored only 17 points and let the Eagles hang around in a game where they really should have been blown out. The Seahawks’ banged-up offensive line did not do a consistent job of protecting quarterback Russell Wilson, and as a team, the Seahawks rushed for only 19 yards. That’s a terrible sign heading into Green Bay.

Seattle was also fortunate that Philadelphia quarterback Carson Wentz got knocked out of the game in its early stages with a head injury. Seattle played a mediocre opponent without its starting quarterback and won by only eight points. The Eagles were at the Seahawks’ 10-yard line late in the game with a chance to score a touchdown and set up a game-tying 2-point conversion. The fact that the Seahawks barely beat the shorthanded Eagles isn’t a good argument for their chances against the Packers, who have had some extra rest.

The Packers’ two worst games of the season were road trips to California, as they lost away games to both the Los Angeles Chargers and the San Francisco 49ers. Their only loss at home was to the Eagles in Week 4. Since then, they have been perfect at home and perfect in cold-weather games. The temperature is supposed to be near 25 degrees Fahrenheit for this contest, which will start at 5:40 p.m. in Wisconsin — a night game in winter.

The Packers should feel comfortable at home. They should also feel comfortable about their pass rush, which stars Preston Smith, against an injury-ravaged Seattle offensive line. The Seahawks might not have either Duane Brown or Mike Iupati, as both linemen are questionable for Sunday. The Packers’ defensive line against the Seattle offensive line is the biggest mismatch of the game. It will be up to Russell Wilson to make a lot of amazing plays to somehow turn the tide for the Seahawks.

Trends

  • Seahawks are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games as a road underdog.
  • Seahawks are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games after accumulating more than 350 total yards in their previous game.
  • Packers are 7-1 ATS against teams with winning records.
  • Packers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games in January.
  • Packers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 playoff games.

Bottom Line

There are a number of interesting matchups in this game. How will the Seahawks’ banged-up offensive line hold up against the Packers’ pass rush? Can the Seahawks get their ground game going against one of the weaker run defenses in the NFL? Can Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ passing game find a level of consistency?

Russell Wilson is a brilliant quarterback, arguably the most valuable player on any NFC team. However, he has so little protection from his offensive line right now that Green Bay’s pass rush should be able to feast in this game. It will be relatively low-scoring and probably a one-score game — as all Seahawks games are — but Green Bay has the edge.

Prediction: Packers 24, Seahawks 20
