Overview

The Seahawks were able to rebound nicely from their stunning home loss to the New York Giants two weeks ago. After beating up on New York's other team, the Jets, Seattle will look to carry that momentum over into this road game. The Jets have a way of making every opposing offense look pretty good, but it's fair to question whether Russell Wilson and the Seahawks have truly fixed what ailed them against the Giants and in a number of games prior. Having to contend with Chase Young, Montez Sweat, and the ferocious Washington defensive front is no easy task. Chris Carson and the run game could prove vital to the Seahawks' overall offensive success on Sunday.

The biggest question ahead of this game for Washington concerns the status of quarterback Alex Smith. After being forced out of last week's win due to a calf strain, Smith is yet to practice this week at the time of writing. While he's not an explosive quarterback by any means, he's better than Washington's alternative, Dwayne Haskins. With the Seahawks being most vulnerable defensively in the secondary, having a quarterback who can successfully go through his reads and hit pass-catchers Terry McLaurin and Logan Thomas cannot be overstated. If Smith is ultimately ruled out, there's no guarantee that Haskins will be able to accomplish any of those things.

Trends

  1. Seahawks 2020 Betting Trends: 7-6 ATS; 6-7 to the Over
  2. Washington 2020 Betting Trends: 8-5 ATS; 5-8 to the Over
  3. Since 2000, the Seahawks are 8-17-2 ATS when playing on the road following a blowout win of 20 points or more.
  4. Washington is 8-2 ATS in their last ten games with Alex Smith as their starting quarterback.
  5. Road teams are 5-0 straight up and 4-0-1 ATS in the last five head-to-head meetings between the Seahawks and Washington.

Prop Bet

First Team to Reach 25 Points: Neither (+155 at 888sport)

Assuming Alex Smith does play on Sunday, my general handicap for this game leans toward Washington. With that said, Football Team is not going to win a shootout. We'd be looking at a defensive-minded battle, as each of their most recent wins over Pittsburgh and San Francisco played out to be. Washington won both of those games despite scoring only 23 points. While it’s possible they could achieve a similar outcome against Seattle, I could also see the Seahawks winning a close game despite falling short of the 25-point threshold. The total of 44.5 suggests a low-scoring affair. The only way the game could go Under and have a team reach 25 points is for the margin of victory to be at least six points (25-19). I'm going to trust the same Washington defense that I've been trusting all year and take the plus-money value on neither side surpassing two dozen points.

Bottom Line

The point spread for this game opened as Seahawks -3 on the lookahead. Due to the uncertainty of Alex Smith, the line rose rather quickly after it was put back on the board following Week 14 action, reaching as high as Seahawks -6. The total has risen one point from opening to the current 44.5.

It's looking likely that both teams will be a part of the NFC's postseason, but coming into this game, Washington is the much hotter team. The Seahawks are only 4-4 following their 5-0 start, while Football Team has won four straight and five of their last seven after starting the year 1-5. Ron Rivera has done a phenomenal job in leading a playoff push that not many would've thought possible two months ago.

The total on this game is too low for me to get overly excited about taking the under. The uncertain status of Alex Smith has me holding my nose, but I'll roll with Washington ATS as my game pick. The defense is simply too good to comfortably bet against. I feel much better about having a field goal and change in my pocket with the home underdog.

Pick: Washington +5.5 (-110 at 888sport)
