Super Bowl LIV Novelty Prop Bet Guide (2020)

Whether you’re new to sports betting or a betting pro, our Sports Betting Strategy and Advice page is for you. You can get started with our 101 section — including Common Sports Betting Terms â€” or head to more advanced strategy — like 10 Tips to Become a Sharper Sports Bettor â€” to learn more.

While the Super Bowl annually is not only the most-watched sporting event but also one of the most heavily bet, how bettors wager their money might surprise you. Obviously, you can bet on the game, both straight up and against the spread, but prop bets are a more fun option for those just looking to have a few bucks on different outcomes throughout the evening. While some of the wagers we’ll discuss today are only available in faraway places (not US Sportsbooks), many are, and New Jersey sportsbooks like FanDuel have a plethora of options to wet your prop betting beak. Let’s take a look at three of the more fun props I’ve identified a potential edge.

Length of National Anthem: 124.5 Seconds

This first novelty prop will waste no time in being decided, as the National Anthem gets us underway with the betting action just before the actual game kicks off. This year’s rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner will be sung by the former Disney actress Demi Lovato who will follow the likes of Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Gladys Knight in performing the honor. Currently set at just over two minutes, Lovato is known for drawing out her words, as can be seen here at last week’s Grammy Awards performance. The tricky part is, Lovato has sung the national anthem publicly multiple times before, with varying outcomes. At Game 4 of the 2015 World Series, Game 5 of the 2011 World Series, and a 2008 Cowboys’ game, Lovato came in at around two minutes flat. In her most recent performance, however, at the 2018 Mayweather vs. McGregor fight, Lovato came in at just under two minutes and 15 seconds. I think Lovato once again draws it out on the biggest stage of her career.

Pick: Over 124.5 seconds

First Gatorade Color Dunked Over Winning Coach

Originally at around +1000 over the weekend, the longest odds of all the colors, reports surfaced this week on social media that the color of the Gatorade that will be poured on the winning coach’s head will be purple. The rumors essentially suggest that in honor of the death of Kobe Bryant, one of the Laker’s colors would be used to celebrate the victory. Whether or not this rumor is true won’t be verified until the moment it happens, but the flood of money has pushed purple to the overwhelming favorite, currently sitting at +120 at FanDuel. While it would make for great television and a great moment overall, I can’t imagine players are so unfocused this week that they are premeditating the color of Gatorade they would use in a hypothetical win. I’d take the field if I could, but I’ll pick both of the two next highest colors and take my chances with the over 3-to-1 odds on both.

Pick: Red +320 & Yellow/Green/Lime +330

Who Will The MVP Winner Thank First?

I have seen this prop pop up at a few faraway places, and it’s probably my favorite prop bet on the board. The choices range from Teams Owner (+1000) to God (+220), as well as Fans/City (+550), or Family (+650). More often than not, the quarterback wins this award and in this game, we have two in Mahomes and Jimmy G who aren’t the most religion-centric guys, so I first rule out the favorite mentioned above. They are, however, very team-focused guys, which leads me to the option of Teammates / Team, at +140, rightfully the shortest odds on the board. I do think, though, this should be a much bigger favorite and love the value it currently provides.

Pick: Teammates / Team +140
