Super Bowl LVII Early Odds, Picks & Predictions: Eagles vs. Chiefs

The Eagles beat the 49ers in the NFC Championship to earn their Super Bowl berth after opening +4000 to win the Super Bowl before the season. The Chiefs beat the Bengals by a field goal to get revenge after losing to them in the AFC Conference Championship game last season. The Chiefs opened the season at +700 to win the Super Bowl and have put themselves in a position to get it done. It should be a competitive game between two of the best teams in the league. Super Bowl LVII will be played in Glendale, Ariz., on Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. EST.

The Eagles’ defensive front has wreaked havoc on quarterbacks throughout the season, and it was no different against the 49ers. Haason Reddick had two sacks, one a strip sack and recovered a fumble on a Josh Johnson fumbled snap. He had 16 sacks in the regular season and now has 3.5 sacks in the postseason thus far. The Eagles’ defense has eight total sacks this postseason and held each of their opponents to seven points. They are also the best team in the league at defending the pass, partly due to their pass rush, and only allow 179.8 passing yards per game. They offer an intimidating matchup for every opponent.

On offense, they picked up right where they left off in the regular season. They ran for 268 yards in their second-round game with the Giants and 148 yards against the 49ers. They also have not turned the ball over this postseason, which is not surprising because they only had 19 turnovers with a +8-turnover differential. Jalen Hurts will have a couple more weeks for his shoulder to heal, which forced him out of two games in weeks 16 and 17. His rushing ability makes this offense one of the most efficient in the league, scoring 28.1 points per game.

The Chiefs’ defense only ranked behind the Eagles in sacks during the regular season and used that pressure to rattle Joe Burrow in the NFC Conference Championship. They racked up five sacks: Chris Jones with two and Frank Clark with 1.5. They also forced two interceptions, which is not something they did well during the regular season. However, they have forced three interceptions in their two postseason matchups.

Patrick Mahomes powered through an ankle injury to beat the Bengals in front of the Kansas City crowd and will now have some time to take care of his injury. He still threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns and showed why he is the frontrunner for MVP. The run game was nonexistent, as they only accounted for 42 rushing yards. They were the No. 1 offense in the league this season while only averaging 115.9 rushing yards per game, and they can overcome this weakness.

Super Bowl LVII Opening Betting Odds

Opening Lines: Eagles -2, O/U 49.5

Moneyline: KC: +110, PHI: -130

The Eagles are the slight favorite at open, which is not surprising given the matchup. They are a solid team against the pass and will be able to get to Mahomes. The Chiefs allowed three sacks in their win over the Bengals, and the Eagles’ defensive front is the best in the league. Mahomes can deal with the pressure with his outstanding improvisation, assuming his ankle heals by game time and does not hinder his mobility.

The Chiefs’ defense ranks eighth league-wide with 107.2 rushing yards allowed per game, but they will have to deal with the legs of Jalen Hurts. They should also be able to get pressure on Hurts throughout the game, but the Eagles can limit that pressure with a dominant run game. Both defenses will likely get to the quarterback and affect the outcome of this game. The Eagles’ running offense should run the clock more than usual, while the defenses will shine, limiting the number of points scored by both teams.

Pick: Eagles -2, U49.5
