The Book Report: Volume 5

If you placed a bet on a game in the NFL on Sunday, chances are, you won.

The Book Report for this week starts with Week 2 of the National Football League and the amount of money that was lost by the guys behind the counter. Joe Public had a very good weekend.

DraftKings Sportsbook

We start with DraftKings Sportsbook who reported that if the Saints had defeated the Raiders and covered on Monday Night Football, the book’s total losses for the weekend would have hit $10 million dollars. That would have been one of the worst weekends in DraftKings’ history. They dodged that bullet.

Even with the Raiders winning the game outright, however, it was still an awful weekend for DK and the vast majority of bookmakers across the country. When the favorites dominate and all teaser bets hit on an NFL Sunday, the books get crushed.

FanDuel Sportsbook

At FanDuel, they reported that one customer in New Jersey on Sunday had a massive NFL Parlay using Money Line, Winning Margin (4-way), and Winning Margin (10 Point Bands). The customer turned $500 into $136,662. Not a bad Sunday at all.

Another FanDuel New Jersey customer on Sunday had a similar NFL Parlay using Money Line and Winning Margin (4-way). That customer turned $1,300 into $59,118.

BetMGM

BetMGM took several big bets on Sunday including $150,000 on the Lions +6.5, $150,000 on the Dolphins +5.5 and $150,000 on the Bucs -8. Two of the three hit for the player.

Before the Monday Night Football game, BetMGM made a major announcement as they expanded their relationship with the Raiders to become an official sports betting partner of the team.

“We are pleased to add BetMGM to the MGM Resorts partnership portfolio,” said Raiders President Marc Badain said in a release. “The addition of BetMGM will open new levels of engagement for Raiders fans and guests of Allegiant Stadium.”

Also before the game, BetMGM announced that Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx will star in a new ad campaign.

“Jamie is an exceptional talent and we’re proud to have him partner with us on our new campaign for BetMGM,” said BetMGM’s Chief Marketing Officer Matt Prevost said in a release. “The King of Sportsbooks campaign is the next step in the evolution of the BetMGM brand and Jamie brings a unique ability to tell our story in an incredibly creative and entertaining way. BetMGM exists at the intersection of sports and entertainment and Jamie fits this positioning perfectly; we couldn’t be more excited to welcome him to the BetMGM family.”

Other Sportsbooks

The Chiefs won their game against the Chargers but didn’t cover. According to William Hill Director of Trading Nick Bogdanovich, that outcome was massive.

At BetRivers and Sugarhouse, they reported heavy action on the NFL on games that turned out to be big losers for the bookmaker.

A whopping 87% of gamblers backed the Ravens at -7 against the Texans which easily hit as the Baltimore cruised to a big road win. 81% of the players laid the -6.5 points with Cardinals taking on Washington which was never in doubt as Arizona continues it’s strong start to the season.

Not to be outdone, the Packers game saw 34% of the total bets on Sunday with the public hammering Green Bay -6.5 and the over 50 making it the most heavily bet game on the card. Finally, the Chiefs money line was the second most popular bet of the entire weekend. All 3 of those outcomes were very costly for the book.

General Election Betting News

Finally, there has been a long debate over the legalization of gambling on a political election. The South Point’s Jimmy Vacarro spoke about his desire to book the election this week on VSIN.

Well, DraftKings announced on Tuesday that they will be running a free to play contest for $50,000 on the 2020 General Election in the United States.

DraftKings Kayla Schmalz said via email “We have been encouraged by the response to an earlier political pool we did for the Democratic Debate back in March, as people are passionate about politics in the same way they’re passionate about sports. Currently, the Presidential Election of 2020, is our second largest pool behind the NFL FTP Survivor Pool.”
