The Book Report Volume 7

Everything was going along as usual on Tuesday, we are all set to write about college football being rough for the public but how they made it back with overs in the NFL, until Tuesday afternoon when a bet from the heavens dropped that shook the sports gambling world.

The Book Report begins with what one sports bettor laid down which is considered the largest parlay bet ever taken by the legal U.S. sports book.

DraftKings Sportsbook

If you have listened to my BettingPros.com podcast, The Daily Juice, you know how I feel about highly publicized sports bets. There is a reason why the book tells the world about a wager because they either are comfortable with the position or they want the free marketing that comes with the reaction from the public. There is a rubber-necking effect on massive bets being placed.

Recently, the sports gambling media has begun to push back on the sports books after some professional gamblers online started to question the authenticity of some of the wagers being reported. Multiple media outlets reported a $3 million dollar 3-team parlay that DraftKings took on Tuesday afternoon.

When the news broke, sports gambling twitter loudly voiced their opinion on the wager. One professional gambler posted quite the thread on the subject.

Once the largest parlay bet ever was reported by DraftKings, reporters were quick to do their best to confirm that the bet was actually taken. It’s not an easy thing to do.

However, some in the media felt like they were being put in a tough spot without being able to speak to the bettor. David Payne Purdum, one of the most respected reporters in the space, tweeted out his frustration with the story. The bet wasn’t just the largest mobile bet ever taken by a sports book, it was also the largest bet ever taken by DraftKings.

The key word in that tweet was “perhaps”.

We are at the mercy of what the sports books tell us. As reporters, unless you talk to the bettor who placed the bet, there is only one side of the story available. The motives of the sports book to release the information are often unknown. The book will never tell you the name of the person who placed the bet due to privacy concerns, so you are in a difficult position to verify something as newsworthy as a multi-million dollar parlay. It’s history after all, but is the bet real?

For now, we have to trust that the bet is live and authentic.

FanDuel Sportsbook

Monday night was a rough one for the folks at FanDuel. The Kansas City Chiefs were -11 against the New England Patriots in the early game of the night after the contest was postponed from Sunday. It was a profitable outcome for the public.

  • 71% of bets and 80% of money for KC on the Spread
  • 52% of bets and 80% of money for KC on the ML

The late game saw the Green Bay Packers laying 5.5 to the Atlanta Falcons and again, the public cashed a bunch of tickets.

  • 84% of bets and 84% of money for GB on the Spread
  • 56% of bets and 70% of money for GB on the ML

FanDuel also saw a parlay bet that paid off big as one player put $500 down and turned it into $82,986 with a 3-leg same-game parlay during Sunday Night Football. The bettor played Carson Wentz to score a TD, Eagles defense to score a TD, and the Eagles to win on the moneyline.

However, don’t feel too bad for the book. Arizona losing outright to the Panthers was a massive outcome for the guys on the other side of the counter.

  • 92% of bets and 90% of money for ARZ on the Spread
  • 77% of bets and 74% of money for ARZ on the ML

BetMGM

Points and the NFL go together like peanut butter and jelly in 2020. Gamblers have made trail walking to the windows to cash over tickets this season but one player at BetMGM got a little overconfident in Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan.

While the Packers won 30-16 and covered the 6-point line, Green Bay and Atlanta fell well short of covering the 56.5 total.

Other Sportsbooks

At BetRivers in Illinois, they reported that “the UFC was responsible for the largest single bet of the entire weekend thanks to former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm (-125) defeating Irene Aldana (+110) via unanimous decision in the main event of UFC on ESPN 16 Saturday night. A bettor placed an $11,875 bet on Holm -125 ML, earning a payout of $21,375.”

At Sugarhouse, baseball has seen a lot of action on two teams in particular. The book released that the Astros and Yankees are “the popular picks to meet in the ALCS. The Astros are backed by 78% of total series handle. The Yankees are backed by 83% of total series handle.”
