As a summer of unknowns barrels into sight for both the sporting world and the rest of us, four modern American folk heroes have come to our rescue. This Sunday, Tiger Woods pairs up with Peyton Manning to take on Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady in a golf event that will benefit COVID-19 relief efforts.
These are names that need no backstory.
This made-for-TV event should be great, with four of the most competitive athletes we’ve ever seen facing off against each other. Let’s take a closer look at the event hosted by the one and only Charles Barkley.

Format: They’ll play fourball (best ball) on the front nine, and they’ll change to a modified alternate shot format on the back nine. In that format, each player will tee off, and then the pair will play an alternate shot from the drive. Additionally, on-course challenges will be used throughout the match to drive additional competition and to raise more charitable funds.
Betting Breakdown: It’s been 18 months since Tiger and Phil went at it the first time in a competitive affair that Phil won. I don’t doubt that the ultra-competitive alpha Tiger will have this in the back of his mind in this one. That’s especially true since they’re playing at Tiger’s home course, Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida.
Because Tiger hasn’t played on tour since February, some are calling him rusty. However, Phil wasn’t exactly lighting it up even before the PGA suspended play. While the professionals should be able to shake off the rust easily, the two quarterbacks might not be able to.
Since Brady has been playing football late into the year for seemingly forever, I expect that Mickelson will need to carry his partner more than Woods will have to, especially early. That said, I’m not only playing Woods/Manning on some early hole props, but I’m also taking them for the match as well.
