The Match VII: Woods/McIlroy vs. Thomas/Spieth (2022 Golf)

The wait is nearly over; on December 10th at Belleair, Florida’s Pelican Golf Club, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will compete against Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in the most recent edition of “The Match.”

The exhibition series, which will be held for the seventh time and second in 2022 after an NFL quarterback battle was waged in June, received the four superstars’ commitment a few months ago. The match will be broadcasted on TNT and is slated to begin at 6 p.m. under lights for what should be some incredible action with all four players mic’d up.

Let’s take a closer look at the format, event details and how things might play out Saturday night in Florida.

Woods/McIlroy (+105) vs. Thomas/Spieth (-130), Saturday 6:00 PM EST

Watch: TBS, TruTV and HLN

Lasting 12 holes, the format is said to be better ball match play, and as always, will have a fun tone to it with all money going to charity. This year, the money raised will go toward Hurricane Ian assistance, a cause close to the heart of many Floridians.

This will be Woods’ third appearance in “The Match”, as the legend’s days of competitive golf become more numbered by the day. He took part in the opening match against Phil Mickelson in November of 2018 and then returned in 2020 to team up with Peyton Manning to defeat Mickelson and Tom Brady in a charity competition during the early stages of the pandemic.

McIlroy, Spieth and Thomas will be making their debuts, though Thomas did serve as a pundit during the aforementioned 2020 charity match. In order to promote Payne’s Valley Golf Club, the first public-access golf course created by Woods’ TGR Design firm, and to generate money for the Payne Family Foundation, Woods, McIlroy and Thomas took part in a similar exhibition in September 2020.

As for the main attraction, since recovering from a vehicle accident in February 2021, Woods made three official starts in 2022. He made the cut at the Masters and PGA Championships and might have said his final goodbyes to the Old Course at the Open Championship. In regards to his teammate, McIlroy won three times in 2022, including the FedEx Cup, and will figure to be this team’s big hitter off the tee with Tiger nursing his latest injury.

Thomas captured the PGA Championship for the second time in his career with a playoff victory at Southern Hills, while Spieth won the RBC Heritage and just led the United States to victory in the Presidents Cup with a 5-0-0 record.

With youth and health on their side, I like for old friends Thomas and Spieth to run away with this one.

Pick: Thomas/Spieth (-130)
