Overview

Week 9 saw the Falcons fall to the visiting Chargers 20-17, failing to cover the 2.5-point spread. Cordarelle Patterson – the team’s starting running back for the first time since Week 4 – recorded 44 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 attempts.

At the helm, QB Marcus Mariota had his second-lowest passing yardage total (129) of the season and second-worst completion percentage (52.2%). He was also held without a touchdown pass for the third time this year.

As 7-point underdogs, the Panthers were destroyed 42-21 by the Bengals in Week 9. The Panthers failed to cover, as the wheels are really starting to come off fpr them. They didn’t score until the third quarter, and, at the half, they trailed 35-0.

In place of PJ Walker who had nine yards on 3 of 10 passing with two interceptions, QB Baker Mayfield made his first appearance on the field since Week 5. He completed 10 of 20 throws for 155 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

Bottom Line

Things appear they’re going to get worse in Carolina before they get better, as the team has already fired two defensive coaches during the short week. This, of course, just comes weeks after the Matt Rhule era ended. The former head coach was fired following a 1-4 start.

As for the Falcons, despite losing two of their past three, they are still tied for the lead in the division and very much in the thick of it. While the offense has struggled as of late, they still rank top-10 in the league in both points scored and rushing yards. The Falcons remain one of the more formidable offenses in the NFC.

In a game which I would have the Falcons as a touchdown favorite if it were in Atlanta, I’m laying the field goal in Carolina.

Pick: Falcons -3
