Thursday's Best MLB Picks & Bets
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Tampa Bay Rays (-110) at Boston Red Sox (-110) | O/U 9.0 (-120/-102) MLB Picks
The American League East could get exciting in the second half, as the Red Sox have now moved back into contention. They are one of the hotter teams in that division, having won six straight, including eight out of their last ten, and are now 5.5 games out of first.
It's been a brutal first season in Boston for Walker Buehler as he comes in with a 6.25 ERA. His recent starts continue to prove that this isn't his year. While he was better in his most recent outing against a below-average Washington lineup, he had allowed seven walks in four innings in a couple of starts prior, and he allowed eight earned runs in a different start before that. Buehler was one of the best swing-and-miss pitchers at his peak, but this year he’s in the 13th percentile in whiff rate.
While Buehler could get touched up against a Rays lineup that has a .743 OPS since June 25th (10th), the Red Sox lineup is scorching hot and in that same span is leading the league with a .888 OPS.
Pick: Over 9.0 Runs (-120)
Atlanta Braves (-157) at Athletics (+128) | O/U 10.0 (-107/-114) MLB Picks
It looks like it will be a lost season for the Braves. They are coming into Thursday’s contest 13.5 games out of first in the National League East. They aren't getting better by losing five straight.
This team still has a lot of talent, and the future is bright with what they have. Spencer Strider is one of those bright spots, and we're finally seeing the Strider we’ve remembered from seasons past. After a tough start to the year, he’s bounced back. In his last six starts, he has a 3.00 ERA and is averaging 7.3 strikeouts per game. The velocity of the fastball is starting to return as he's frequently hitting the upper-90s after struggling earlier in the year. The slider is back, too, and he has a 53.7% whiff rate.
Strider gets the Athletics, where he has the chance to rack up the strikeouts as they have an MLB-worst 26.5% strikeout rate since June 25th.
Pick: Braves -1.5 (+104)
Seattle Mariners (-125) at New York Yankees (+103) | O/U 9.0 (-112/-108) MLB Picks
After a tough stretch where the Yankees lost their hold on first place, they are getting back on track. They have the chance to win their fourth straight and sweep the Mariners.
Marcus Stroman is getting back to form since coming off the injured list (IL). In two starts, he's gone 10 total innings, allowing four earned runs. His control was much better in the second outing against the Mets, and he did well with keeping the ball down and inducing ground balls.
We could see a lot of swings and misses from the Mariners, who are 27th in whiff rate, and also a high number of ground balls, as they are 19th in ground ball rate. This plays well into Stroman's strategy.
Pick: Yankees Moneyline (+103)
