(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Toronto Blue Jays (-103) at St. Louis Cardinals (-118) | O/U 8.5 (-102/-119)
Miles Mikolas had an All-Star season in his initial year in St. Louis, but he has regressed since then, with a 4.33 ERA and six consecutive seasons with a sub-.500 record.
Mikolas has never been an overpowering pitcher, but he seems to approach his opposition like one because he tends to throw at the heart of the plate rather than trying to paint corners. This is how his whiff rate is in the first percentile, and his barrel rate is in the 29th percentile.
The Blue Jays have the lowest whiff rate in the league, and that's possibly why they have demolished Mikolas in the past by batting .361.
Pick: Blue Jays Moneyline (-103)
Chicago Cubs (-110) at Philadelphia Phillies (-110) | O/U 9.5 (-105/-116)
If it weren't for the Reds, Colin Rea would be having a Cy Young-type season. You take away the two starts against Cincinnati, and he would have a 2.11 ERA. However, in those two starts, he allowed 12 earned runs, which bumps his number up to 3.59.
Rea's success this season has been because he changed his pitching style and gone from a heavy sinker ball pitcher, who threw that pitch 30% of the time last season to 6.1% this year, to a fastball pitcher, throwing it from a 19.5% rate in 2024 to 48.5% in 2025.
Even with throwing more fastballs, Rea is not an overpowering pitcher. He focuses on location and getting ahead in counts, and he's been phenomenal with a 71.9% first strike rate. That allows him to control the at-bats and go through his sequence.
The Phillies are aggressive, having the third-highest first-pitch swing rate (34.7%), but they are 16th in whiff rate and 23rd in chase rate. Looking at some of the Phillies hitters that have success off Rea, like Max Kepler (2-for-4), J.T. Realmuto (4-for-10) and Brandon Marsh (3-for-4), they are all struggling this season. Rea could have some success.
Pick: Cubs Moneyline (-110)
New York Yankees (-206) at Kansas City Royals (+167) | O/U 8.5 (-108/-112)
Max Fried is continuing his Cy Young season after a rough start against the Dodgers. He bounced back in his most recent start and went six scoreless against Cleveland, allowing only one hit. That gave him his MLB-best eighth win of the year. His 1.78 ERA ranks fourth. Location is key for someone like Fried, who isn't overpowering and has always been known to have great control and can keep the ball away from the hitter’s power zone.
The Royals’ lineup has been inconsistent throughout the season, and a team that relies on solid contact is 27th in barrel rate, which is excellent for contact pitchers like Fried.
Pick: Yankees -1.5 (-123)
