Tuesday’s MLB Best Bets

(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)

Philadelphia Phillies (-189) at Miami Marlins (+154) | O/U 8.0 (-118/-103)

The Phillies had recently dropped 10 of their last 12 games, which knocked them out of first place, but they are now roaring back and have won five straight. They'll try to go for six with Jesus Luzardo getting the start. He had a fantastic beginning to the season thanks to a 2.15 ERA in his first 11 starts. He then proceeded to allow 20 earned runs in his next 5.2 innings, spanning over two starts.

The problem was that he had no control over his pitches and couldn't keep them at the bottom of the plate. His goal is for his pitches to drop off so hitters will swing under for fly ball outs; instead, he was staying towards the heart of the plate. He might have fixed those problems because he shut down an excellent Cubs offense in his last start, allowing just one earned run and recording 10 strikeouts over six innings.

Luzardo is going up against a bottom-tier offense in the Marlins, who rank 23rd in runs scored per game (4.06). Luzardo doesn't need to be perfect, especially with Cal Quantrill on the other side, who is 3-7 with a 5.61 ERA on the season. He has already allowed seven earned runs to the Phillies this season.

Pick: Phillies -1.5 (-107)

Minnesota Twins (+101) at Cincinnati Reds (-123) | O/U 8.5 (-122/+101)

The Reds have been inconsistent this season, but they've been playing much better lately, winning seven of their last nine games. Andrew Abbott is establishing himself as a Cy Young contender. He's coming in with a 1.87 ERA for the season, third-best in the National League, and he is coming off pitching a complete game shutout against the Guardians.

Abbott's fastball isn't overpowering, but it has great movement, and it tends to rise in the zone. He’s also increased the use of the change-up, which is keeping hitters off balance.

The Reds hurler is facing the Twins, who struggle against lefties - their .225 average is 23rd in the league.

Pick: Reds Moneyline (-123)

Cleveland Guardians (+138) at San Francisco Giants (-169) | O/U 7.0 (-123/+101)

Robbie Ray looks like he’ll throw his name in the National League Cy Young race. If he does win it, he would become just the eighth pitcher to win the award in both leagues. He’s been nearly untouchable recently with quality starts in eight of his last nine outings with a 1.89 ERA in that span. Ray does well with using the movement of a fastball to deceive batters and will continually let it rise throughout the at-bat. While hitters know it’s coming, they struggle to make the necessary adjustments.

The Guardians have been average against left-handed pitchers, thanks to being 17th in batting average against lefties this season (.228). They've struggled with swing and misses with their 25.8% whiff rate (24th). With Ray's whiff rate being 80th percentile, he should be effective.

Pick: Giants -1.5 (+135)
