Boston Red Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles
At first, I was thinking the under with the Orioles hitting just .198 over the last week and struggling to score runs. But both starting pitchers have had two outings against the other team - a really good one (one earned run or fewer) and a not-so-good one (three or more earned runs).
Boston has been making good contact over the last week (.256 average). With Baltimore's lineup hitting .300 against Payton Tolle, this could be the game it wakes up. But the Red Sox have had Baltimore's number in this series, and that will continue today.
If you prefer to be cautious, take the Moneyline (-143), but the Boston run line is a solid value play.
Pick: Red Sox -1.5 (+123)
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Houston Astros
Prior to scoring four runs in yesterday's win over the Astros, Arizona had gone five games in a row scoring two runs or fewer.
It may be wishful thinking for them to have another such outing today, as they have struggled against Peter Lambert (.190 opponents’ batting average in 31 at-bats).
However, Eduardo Rodriguez is one of the better pitchers in baseball this season (14-5, 2.59 ERA, .236 opponents’ batting average). But Houston’s lineup has a solid history against him (.313 average in 99 at-bats).
That is probably why Houston is a slight favorite in this game. With that in mind, I'd say picking a winner in this game is more of a toss-up. But with neither team hitting well over the last week (Arizona: .182; Houston: .226), the under is absolutely the best bet for this game.
Pick: Under 8.0 Runs (-112)
Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox
Minnesota could be catching the White Sox at the right time; they need a win to keep their slim Wild Card hopes alive, and Chicago is struggling at the plate, hitting a league-worst .182 over the last week and scoring 19 runs in the past seven games. Bailey Ober held the White Sox to two hits and one earned run in his last outing on August 29th at home.
There is reason to think Ober could keep the White Sox lineup relatively quiet. However, he has not been at his best on the road (2-3 in nine starts, 6.20 ERA, .299 opponents’ batting average). That gives White Sox supporters a glimmer of hope; the Minnesota Moneyline is still the best play at +124.
