(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook unless otherwise noted)
Miami Dolphins Under 8.5 Wins (-145)
The Dolphins are coming off an 8-9 season in which they ranked 21st in overall defense-adjusted value over average (DVOA). It's hard to see how the Dolphins have gotten any better in the offseason. It looks as if they've gotten worse.
The offensive line was already a problem area for Miami before their best blocker, left tackle Terron Armstead, announced his retirement in April. Despite a glaring lack of talent in the secondary, the Dolphins have said they're trying to trade high-priced cornerback Jalen Ramsey. They'd probably love to trade high-priced wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who removed himself from the team's final game of the 2024 season.
The first half of the Dolphins' schedule includes winnable games against the Colts, Patriots, Jets, Panthers, Browns and Falcons - although it is by no means a lock that Miami goes .500 or better in those games. It's the back half of the schedule that's problematic.
The Dolphins have been notoriously bad in cold-weather games, and it looks as if they'll be forced to play some late in the season, with a late-November road game against the Packers, December road games against the Jets and Steelers and a January road game against the Patriots. The Dolphins also have a brutal midseason stretch with consecutive games against the Ravens, Bills and Commanders.
Not only am I laying the –145 juice on the Dolphins to finish with fewer than 8.5 wins, but I'm also betting under 6.5 wins at +190 odds on FanDuel.
Lions Under 10.5 Wins (+100)
As noted by Warren Sharp of Sharp Football, the Lions have a brutal slate of road games to start the season, traveling to Green Bay, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Washington and Philadelphia over the first 11 weeks of the regular season. Detroit will play nine road games this season.
The NFC North looks like a gauntlet this season, with the Lions, Packers and Vikings all coming off playoff seasons, and the Bears looking dramatically improved. The Lions will have to wage war against talented divisional foes six times.
And we should probably be concerned about the brain drain in Detroit. Ben Johnson, widely regarded as one of the best offensive coordinators in the league, left the Lions to take the Bears' head-coaching job. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn left to take the Jets' head-coaching job.
Yes, the Lions finished 15-2 last season, but the 2025 season is going to be challenging for the boys in Honolulu Blue. I like getting even money on the Lions finishing with under 10.5 wins.
Commanders Over 9.5 Wins (+105)
Washington went 12-5 last season and finished 10th in overall DVOA.
The Commanders kept the good vibes going in the offseason by adding stud left tackle Laremy Tunsil to protect NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels, along with wide receiver Deebo Samuel and defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw.
The NFL is rolling out a red carpet for the Commanders early in the season, with games against the Giants, Raiders and Falcons over the first four weeks.
The only powerhouse in the NFC East is the Eagles, and Philadelphia may rest starters when the Commanders visit the City of Brotherly Love in Week 18.
I love getting plus-money on the Commanders to finish with more than 9.5 wins.
Vikings Under 8.5 Wins (+120 on DraftKings Sportsbook)
Admittedly, I don't love betting against such a well-coached team. Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell is a masterful offensive choreographer, and defensive coordinator Brian Flores is one of the best in the business.
But as mentioned earlier, the NFC North is a brutal division. And the Vikings face a difficult schedule overall.
Minnesota plays consecutive games in Europe - a Week 4 game against the Steelers in Ireland, followed by a Week 5 game against the Browns in England. After a Week 6 bye, the Vikings then have a nasty four-game stretch against the Eagles, Chargers, Lions and Ravens.
The Vikings will also be breaking in J.J. McCarthy at quarterback. Minnesota drafted McCarthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but he missed his entire rookie season with a torn meniscus.
With those obstacles, it seems like a good value to get plus-money on a sub-.500 season for the Vikings.
