Top 5 WNBA Picks & Predictions: Wednesday (8/12)
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Portland Fire +12.5 (-110)
This selection will easily be the sweatiest of the night. We also understand if it's a little too out of your comfort zone. Minnesota are the top dogs in the league currently, and we don't see that changing much going into the Playoffs. Portland has covered the spread in 50 percent of their games this season - including two consecutive contests at home. Minnesota has been absolutely dominant even without the services of Napheesa Collier. Since her return, the Lynx have lost only one game.
Where we feel we may have an edge is on the fact that Minnesota has been absolutely dreadful at covering the spread. The Lynx are 4-7 against the spread over their previous 11 games. When Portland last faced off against the Lynx in Minnesota on 7/18, the Fire kept that contest within eight points. Minnesota has only covered a spread of 10 or more in 1 of 9 games. Portland is more than likely going to have a difficult time getting the win tonight. However, their chances of keeping this contest within 13 points seem highly possible.
Dallas Wings -9.5 (+100)
This number is definitely going to come down throughout the day, so you definitely want to wait until closer to tip-off before you get to the window. The Dallas Wings have dropped three straight games, yet could be in store for a bounce back against a Toronto Tempo squad mired in struggles. Dallas has won on two separate occasions when facing Toronto this year. We feel things appear to be quite lined up for a third.
As previously stated, you probably want to jump on this number when it gets closer to 7.5. Given the current odds at +100 to cover 9.5 and -120 to fall short, it's only a matter of time before the public starts taking the +100. Dallas is 4-4 against the spread when playing at home as the favorite. Toronto has lost nine consecutive games - 8-of-9 were by 10 points or more. This has been a horrific turn of events for a Tempo team that started out quite promising. Until Brittney Sykes returns, it may be best just to take the points for their opponent going forward in 2026.
Dallas Wings Under 97.5 Total Team Points (-115)
The 98+ total is absolutely outrageous and probably would still be just as eye-popping as if Jessica Shepard (ankle) were available for this game. Azzi Fudd is also questionable after sustaining a knee injury one week ago. Alana Smith and Odyssey Sims are fantastic replacements. However, with Shepard and Fudd not in uniform, the Wings incur a massive hit to their offense.
This is why we recommended waiting on the previous selection. There's simply no way the spread will stay 9.5 with Dallas missing two of their starters - one being their best rebounding option, the other the most successful three-point threat. Toronto is disastrous at the moment; that cannot be overstated. That said, we simply cannot envision the Wings doing enough to almost crack 100 points. Dallas is averaging 88.2 points through the previous 10 games.
Chicago Sky @ Golden State Valkyries Over 167.5 (-105)
When playing against the Golden State Valkyries, points become something of a scarcity. The Valkyries own the highest defense rating in the WNBA (101.8) and hold the opposition to the fewest points per game (77.1), almost five points fewer than the team ranked second. Despite the stellar defense, Golden State is fantastic against the over when playing at home. The Valkyries cover the over on 69 percent of games played on their home court as the favorite.
Chicago is in a bad way without Sydney Taylor, who could miss another contest with a quad injury. Dijonai Carrington stepped in on Monday and provided 26 points in 27 minutes. Chicago is averaging just under 91 points through the previous five games. As for the Valkyries, they have also found success at the rim as of late - scoring 91.0 points as well through the previous five games.
The sportsbooks seem to be trying to push the under (-115). However, the Valkyries and Sky are combining for almost 15 more points over the last five games played. The 167.5 seems to be heavily focused on the Valkyries defense, and not the fact these teams are piling up the points in the last two weeks.
Kamilla Cardoso To Record A Double Double (+192)
In a game where there could be a fair amount of scoring, you normally want to take a high-volume option for points. We are going to forgo that logic and take a shot on a high return play that will more than likely go under the radar this evening. Golden State may not have an answer for Cardoso on the boards or in the paint tonight, and that should result in another strong outing for the young center. Cardoso has recorded a double-double in 3 of 5 games.
The center for the Sky is scoring 13.4 points, while grabbing 10.8 boards through the last five games. Cardoso is shooting an impressive 51 percent from the field on 12.3 attempts over the previous four contests. Golden State ranks in the bottom half of the league in opposition defensive rebound percentage (32 percent) and allows over eight offensive rebounds per game. The Valkyries also concede just below 11 points off of second chance opportunities.
Best of luck with your picks. Enjoy the games tonight.
