Top MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Picks & Odds for Tuesday, August 9 (2022)

Let’s take a look at some No Runs First Inning prop bet odds and picks for Tuesday’s slate.

Miami Marlins vs. Philadelphia Phillies – 7:05 pm ET

In this battle of NL East foes, we get a pair of two excellent starters. Handling the top of the first will be one of the best pitchers in baseball, Zack Wheeler. Wheeler enters this start with a 2.69 ERA and 1.01 WHIP on the season. So it should come as no surprise that he’s also been spectacular in the first inning. Through 20 starts, he holds a 1.35 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and averages a strikeout per inning. Tonight, he gets a Marlins lineup that is 28th in first-inning scoring. On top of that, Miami has been cold at the dish of late as they have failed to score in the first in each of their last three games. So all signs point to Wheeler adding another tally to that streak.

As for the bottom of the first, that will be tasked to rookie left-hander Braxton Garrett. Garrett has quietly been a star in the Marlins’ excellent rotation. He holds a 3.88 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP upon entering this start. Garrett’s stuff has generated plenty of strikeouts, and he will need more as the first inning hasn’t been so kind to him. He has a 4.91 ERA and 1.55 WHIP through 11 starts this year, but he has racked up 15 strikeouts as well. The Phillies are no easy task in the first as they rank 17th in first-inning runs per game and 11th at home, but Garrett will have a significant matchup edge over their lead hitter Schwarber. This play will depend on if he can keep Hoskins and Bohm in the yard. Judging by his .78 home run per nine rate, I’m pretty confident that he will.

Pick: NFRI -125

Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland Athletics – 9:40 pm ET

We’re going right back to the well in this series as an Angels’ first-inning homer was the only run surrendered by either starter last night, so we’re onto something in this series. James Kaprielian will get the ball and try to silence the Angels’ bats. While his numbers may not look great, he’s been solid in the first inning this year. Through 17 starts, he holds a 2.65 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in the first inning thus far. As we went over yesterday, the Angels are middle of the pack in first-inning scoring, and that homer last night broke a streak of three straight scoreless innings. In addition, Kaprielian has tremendous history against the Angels. They are hitting just .197 off of him in 66 combined at-bats as a team. That includes the top of their order as Ohtani, Walsh, Ward, and Rengifo are all hitting less than .286 off him.

For the other half of the inning, we get a treat as Shohei Ohtani takes the mound. Ohtani has been stellar this sesaon. He takes the ball with a 2.83 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and has racked up 152 strikeouts in 105 innings pitched. That dominance often begins in the first innings, as he has a 2.50 ERA and 36 percent strikeout rate through 18 starts. It would be a shock if the A’s scored off Ohtani in the first as they are 24th in first-inning runs per game at home and still have the lowest team batting average in the majors. Just as last night, our sweat will be at the top of the first here.

Pick: NRFI -150
