The NHL season is in full gear! Let's highlight a few key games for today, Sunday, Jan 14.
Sunday's NHL Best Bets
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Detroit Red Wings (+160) at Toronto Maple Leafs (-192) | O/U 7 (-105/-115)
Detroit has simmered since their hot start at the early part of the season, and they went on an awful stretch, but they might be rebounding as they’ve won four of their last five. One of the reasons for that slump was that they have been dealing with a lot of injuries recently, and that's a big reason why their expected goals are at 48.7%.
The Maple Leafs were another team that started off great but went through a rough patch. Although they’ve dropped back-to-back games, their offense has been playing well; Auston Matthews has been hot lately, with 19 goals in his last 18 games. Mitch Marner has 45 points, but Willam Nylander has been their best player, and their 57 points are fifth in the league.
Both teams are healthy at important offensive spots, and while they’ll have their goaltenders, you should still favor a high-scoring game.
Pick: Over 7 Total Goals (-105)
Washington Capitals (+185) at New York Rangers (-225) | O/U 6 (-110/+100)
These two teams are flipping over to play each other again after a matchup just 24 hours ago
On Saturday, the Capitals erased a one-goal deficit to beat the Rangers 3-2. This was another close game they were able to overcome, which is how they are winning. Their -25 goal differential is sixth-worst in the league, but they are 13-1-6 in games decided by one goal.
The Rangers weren't able to build that multiple-goal lead, so to not lose two games in 48 hours, they will need to build a larger lead. They have the capability with an offense scoring one full goal more than their opponent. Igor Shesterkin will be in net for this one, but he has not been at his best this year; a 2.90 GAA is a good number, but for a former Vezina Trophy winner, this would be his worst mark.
The Rangers’ odds are not valuable on the moneyline, and taking them to win on the puckline is tough; these have all been low-scoring matchups and at even odds, you should take the under.
Pick: Under 6 Total Goals (+100)
