Top NHL Odds, Picks & Predictions: Wednesday (1/10)
Just six teams hit the ice tonight in the NHL. Below, I'll dive into each of the games from a betting perspective and round out each breakdown with a best bet.
Let's stay hot on the ice and have another profitable night!
Wednesday's NHL Best Bets
(Odds courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook)
Montreal Canadiens (+145) @ Philadelphia Flyers (-175) | O/U 6.0 (-120/+100)
The NHL action gets underway with an Eastern Conference clash between the Canadiens and the Flyers. Montreal has won two of its last three games, while Philadelphia is slumping, dropping five of their last six. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
This total is on the verge of spilling over to 6.5 goals. I would still play the over at 6.5, but I certainly prefer 6.0 goals, so we have a push to fall back on. It's confirmed that the Habs will start Cayden Primeau in-net tonight. The goaltender comes into this game at 4-4-0 with a 3.30 GAA and .898 SV%. While the Flyers aren't a powerful offense, I expect them to find some success against this underwhelming netminder.
Conversely, Montreal has won two of its last three games, averaging 3.0 goals per game over the stretch. They've also seen at least six goals in seven of their last eight games. Typically, their lousy defense helps drive these games over the total. I anticipate that being the case tonight with a sub-.900 SV% goalie in-net.
Bet: Over 6.0 (-120)
Minnesota Wild (+165) @ Dallas Stars (-200) | O/U 6.0 (-120/+100)
Minnesota and Dallas will square off for the second time in three nights. The Stars won 4-0 in Saint Paul on Monday, which helped them remain in the third spot in the Central Division (51 points). The Wild dropped to seventh in the standings (38 points). This divisional clash is set for 7:30 p.m. ET from the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
I think we'll see a little more scoring tonight, as the teams will likely rely on their depth options in-net tonight. There are no goaltenders confirmed as of publication, but there's a chance we'll at least see Scott Wedgewood in-net for the Stars. The veteran has compiled an 11-4-3 record, but his underlying metrics aren't that great. He owns a 3.17 GAA and .894 SV%. In his last five starts, there have been an average of 8.2 goals per game! Each game has seen at least seven goals.
As for Dallas' offense, they're humming this year, ranking fifth offensively (3.6 GPG). This is no longer a Dallas squad that wants to beat you 2-1 every night. This team can light up the scoreboard, and with Jake Oettinger still sidelined, they've seen some cracks in their own zone. Give me the over here.
Bet: Over 6.0 (-120)
Vegas Golden Knights (+120) @ Colorado Avalanche (-145) | O/U 6.5 (+100/-120)
The night concludes with a heavyweight tilt in the Western Conference as the Golden Knights square off against the Avalanche. This game is slated for 10:00 p.m. ET from Ball Arena in Denver.
I will play the under in this contest. For starters, there's a realistic chance that Adin Hill returns for Vegas tonight. Vegas' head coach, Bruce Cassidy, said he will likely return tonight against Colorado or tomorrow against Boston. If he's back, I love the under. It'll likely move to 6.0 goals, and I still love it there. Hill has been exceptional, going 10-2-0 with a 1.93 GAA and .933 SV%.
The one constant in this game is Vegas' pedestrian offense. They're just 15th in scoring (3.2 GPG) and 14th on the power play (21.83%). They've also managed to score just 2.2 goals per game over their last six contests. I think we turn back the clock and see a scrappy, defensive game tonight in Denver. I'll play the under.
Bet: Under 6.5 (-120)
