Today’s Best Bets

College Basketball Best Bets

Miami vs. Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech is one of the best teams in the country at moving without the ball under Mike Young’s system. After a seven-game losing streak, it has been all about the offense for Virginia Tech, as it has averaged 79.8 points per game in the eight games since (5-3 in that span). Even in home losses earlier in the season, the Hokies held NC State and Clemson, two teams that rank in the league’s top half in scoring, to a combined ten points under its season scoring averages.

Virginia Tech has the personnel to match Miami’s “small ball” style, a system under Jim Larranaga that has allowed the Hurricanes to score an ACC-leading 79.7 points per game. The Hokies are a league-worst 1-8 ATS on the road but are much better at Cassell Coliseum, covering nine of their 15 home games. Thus, we expect a spirited effort from Young’s bunch, which is looking for its second winning streak since ACC play began.

Bet: Virginia Tech -2 (-110 at DraftKings)

NHL Game Picks

Detroit Red Wings vs. Washington Capitals

The Eastern Conference playoff race continues to heat up, seeing just five points separate the top six Wild Card contenders. The Capitals have lost four straight games, moving them to fourth place in the Wild Card with 62 points. As for the Red Wings, they’ve rattled off five wins in their last six games, bringing their season back to life. Detroit comes into this one in sixth place with 60 points. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET from Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

With the way the Wings are playing, I just can’t pass up a plus-money payout with them. They’re getting contributions from everyone right now, but it’s especially been the captain, Dylan Larkin, who has really come on recently. The centerman, who can’t escape the constant questions regarding his contract negotiations, is showing the front office why he should be paid like a top player. Coming out of the All-Star break, where Larkin netted five goals over two All-Star games, he’s racked up 12 points (7G, 5A) over the subsequent six games. He’s riding a six-game point streak coming into tonight’s action.

Furthermore, Washington’s defense has abandoned them in their recent stretch of hockey. They’ve dropped four straight games, surrendering 17 goals over the span. Look for Detroit’s upward-trending offense to take advantage of the Caps’ recent misfortunes and edge out a road win. Let’s lock in the Red Wings moneyline here.

NHL Same Game Parlay

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Buffalo Sabres

    • Leg 1: Sabres ML (+130)
    • Leg 2: OVER 6.5 Total Goals (-135)
    • Leg 3: OVER 3.5 Total Sabres Goals (+140)

The Maple Leafs have had a very easy stretch recently. Their last five games have been two against Chicago, a pair versus Columbus and one against Montreal. The offense had nearly four goals a game in that span, with Ilya Samsonov and Joseph Woll playing well in between the pipes.

Everyone will have to step their game up as they head into Buffalo. The Sabres possess one of the most dynamic lines in the league with Tage Thompson, Jeff Skinner, and Alex Tuch.

The depth of the forward unit makes the Sabres dangerous. On the second line, Dylan Cozens and Victor Olofsson have combined for nine goals in their last ten. On the third, Casey Mittelstadt and Peyton Krebs have six.

Toronto has played three games in four days, and going from playing bottom-four offenses to the third-best is a tough adjustment. Secondly, Buffalo’s recent history shows they’re up to the challenge by beating Toronto in three of their last five matchups.

AFC Conference Winner Best Bets

Brandon Staley has made me look like a fool before. Yet here I am, recommending you take a flyer on the Chargers to win the entire AFC.

The fact is neither Kansas City (+330), Buffalo (+400) or Cincinnati (+550) offer much value. Los Angeles has the fourth-best odds, and I’m convinced they could’ve made a run in the AFC playoffs had they not gagged against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card Round.

Of course, betting on the Chargers puts your hopes into a team that only screws up in the biggest stages. But I’m hoping Kellen Moore can help Justin Herbert and this offense reach a level that the unit couldn’t get to under Joe Lombardi, who was one of the league’s worst coordinators a season ago.

Staley’s defense has the talent on the perimeter and just needs to improve up the middle. The Chargers don’t have much cap space, but they have all seven draft picks, including the 21st overall. Los Angeles has the QB to go to the Super Bowl. It’s just a matter of whether Staley can stay out of his way.

Home Run Leader Picks

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has lived up to the tremendous hype that surrounded him as a top prospect and son of a Hall of Famer. Vlad only hit 32 home runs last season but did slug 48 in 2021, which was good for first place in the American League (tied with Salvador Perez). Still only 23 years old, Guerrero Jr. has the potential to continue to progress as a hitter. While his resumé and age are reasons to buy in, the fact that Vlad Jr. has only missed three games over the last three seasons shows that he can stay on the field. Half the battle of leading the league in an offensive counting statistic, like home runs, is getting enough plate appearances and staying off the injured list.
