U.S. Open 2022: Matthew Fitzpatrick Betting Odds, Preview, & Prediction

All eyes turn to the golf world this weekend as players and fans gear up for the 122nd edition of the U.S. Open Championship. The four-day tournament makes its return to The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., for the first time since 1988 and this will be the fourth time that they’ve hosted (1913, 1963). 

Many players hope to find themselves in the hunt for the Major championship on Sunday, or at least in the running to cash in on the $12.5 million purse. The winner will walk away with a $2.25 million check. Will Matthew Fitzpatrick make a run at one of the most prestigious titles in golf?

Matthew Fitzpatrick Course History

There has not been a professional event held at The Country Club since the Ryder Cup in 1999, so Matthew Fitzpatrick has never played there in any professional capacity. However, The Country Club hosted the U.S. Amateur back in 2013 and Fitzpatrick competed. And not only did the then 18-year-old compete, but he won it outright. It was a 4 & 3 win for the Englishman, who topped Oliver Goss in match play on the final day. He was the first native of England to win the tournament since 1911, when Harold Hilton won it in New York.

Matthew Fitzpatrick Recent Form 

Fitzpatrick has played in 14 events in the 2021-2022 season and he’s finished inside the top 10 on seven occasions. He’s yet to win a tournament this year, but his best finish was second place at the Wells Fargo Championship during the first weekend of May. The 27-year-old followed that performance up with a T5 finish at the PGA Championship at Southern Hills a few weeks ago. 

Most recently, Fitzpatrick shot -9 at St. George’s Golf and Country Club during the RBC Canadian Open and finished tied for 10th. That performance earned him $219,000+ and he’s now made $2.9 million this year.

When it comes to betting on golf, I like to compare recent form to course history and use that as a starting point. Now, being that the only event held at The Country Club over the last 22 years was the U.S. Amateur back in 2013, not a lot of players have competed on this course. I think that’s a huge advantage for Matthew Fitzpatrick heading into this weekend. He won the tournament outright at 18 years old, so not only does he have experience, he’s played well under pressure. 

Building off of his course history, Fitzpatrick is playing incredible golf right now. He’s shown that he’s not going to shy away at big events (i.e. T14 at the Masters, T5 at the PGA Championship), so I think he’s primed to make a run at his first Major championship this weekend. I’ll back Matthew Fitzpatrick to win the 2022 U.S. Open.
