After a rare week off the first UFC event of February will go off Saturday evening at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, NV. With middleweight bouts serving as the co-main and main event, the division will have some shake-ups in its ranks before the night is said and done.

A former Cage Warriors FC middleweight Champion, Hermansson joined the UFC in September 2016 winning seven of his first nine fights quickly ascending the middleweight division. A September 2019 fight against Jared Cannonier, the current #3 contender in the division, derailed what would’ve surely been a future title shot opportunity.
After defeating Kelvin Gastelum in the first round the following summer, Hermansson ran into Marvin Vettori and lost a decision in a great five-round fight. He has picked up a win since vs. Edmen Shahbazyan in May, a unanimous decision victory.
While he trails Strickland in significant strikes landed per minute, he is 8% more accurate. He also holds the advantage in takedown average (2.09 vs 1.32) and submission average at .61 (vs. 33).

Coming into this fight having won his last five straight, Strickland has just two losses since 2015 with one coming to the current middleweight champion Kamaru Usman. Of his five recent wins, three have gone to the judge’s scorecards as Strickland has largely used his elite striking to pick opponents apart from the outside.
A Brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the grappling is there for Strickland despite having used it just once in the UFC, a submission over Bubba McDaniel in 2014.
Bottom Line?
In a fight I have much closer to even on paper, I think Hermansson has all the tools to win this one. Not only does he have stiffer competition over the last few years, but he holds the edge nearly across the board in key metrics that I look at.
