UFC Fight Night: Robbie Lawler vs. Neil Magny Betting Guide (2020)

Like clockwork, the UFC is back with its fifth event in five weeks and once again fighting out of their home at the UFC Apex due to the coronavirus pandemic. Another night of great fights streamed in their entirety on the ESPN family of networks, the UFC has mastered the pandemic sporting event and has been able to mitigate any major outbreaks or disruptions in their blistering schedule.

After a co-main event last week that was scrapped due to a positive (then negative?) COVID-19 positive, the main event did not disappoint as the veteran underdog Frankie Edgar scrapped his way to a five-round decision.

In this week’s co-main, the matchup features a veteran of the sport and UFC OG in Robbie Lawler facing off against a relative journeyman in Neil Magny. Let’s take a closer look at this welterweight affair and see where we can spot the edge.

Stepping into the octagon as the #13 contender for the welterweight belt, UFC veteran Robbie Lawler is trying to stop the worst skid of his fighting career. After joining the UFC in 2013, Lawler went on to terrorize the welterweight division, ultimately winning it in 2014 at UFC 241.

After successfully defending it twice, Lawler lost it at UFC 201 (2016) to Tyrone Woodley and has since not quite looked like the same fighter. A two-year layoff starting in 2017 didn’t help his cause either, getting choked out in the first round by Ben Askren in his first fight back.

The last time we saw him the octagon was a year ago, in a five-round unanimous decision loss to Colby Covington.

When fight fans think of the name Neil Mangy, the word “almost” almost certainly comes to mind. A ten-year veteran of the professional ranks, Mangy joined the UFC in 2013 and has mostly bounced around the welterweight division since then.

His likely biggest win coming against Kelvin Gastelum in 2015, Magny has always had win streaks interrupted by unexpected losses, most commonly by KO/TKO. The last time we saw him fight was earlier this summer at UFC 250, in a unanimous decision win over Anthony Rocco Martin.

In this one, Magny should know from his string of losses that the slow game is his best approach and his methodical tendencies are the ones he should be capitalizing on. In Lawler, I see a fighter well beyond his prime, who with over 40 professional fights, likely only has a few co-main events left.

Pick: Magny by Points (-130)
