England’s path to the quarterfinals was fraught with peril as they had to face none other than the German national team in the round of 16. After two late goals and a clean sheet from Pickford, England is two wins away from the finals. If they advance, they will draw the winner of the Czech Republic vs. Denmark game and will avoid Spain or Italy until the finals. Their scoring drought in the group stage notwithstanding (every other team with two or fewer goals did not advance), England is now among the favorites to win it all. Strong play from Pickford helped them progress despite the scoring woes, and they will need another strong outing from their keeper to avoid the type of letdown we have seen all too often in the round of 16 and quarterfinals.
