Viktor Hovland 2023 PGA Championship: Best Bets & Predictions

The PGA Championship used to bat cleanup as the fourth and final major of the season, but this will be the fifth time that the PGA has been held in May, in between the Masters and the U.S. Open.

Justin Thomas is the defending champion. He shot a final-round 67 at Southern Hills last year and beat Will Zalatoris in a playoff to win the Wanamaker Trophy, the giant piece of hardware awarded annually to the PGA champ. Thomas and Brooks Koepka have combined to win four of the last six PGA Championships, with Collin Morikawa and Phil Mickelson interrupting the Thomas/Koepka reign in 2020 and 2021.

This year’s PGA Championship returns Oak Hill in Pittsford, N.Y., where Jason Dufner finished -10 to win the 2013 PGA, beating runner-up Jim Furyk by two strokes. But the East Course at Oak Hill will look much different than it did at the last PGA here 10 years ago. Course architect Andrew Green presided over a major remodeling intended to make the course more faithful to the original Donald Ross design. The course will once again play at par-70, and after playing at 7,163 yards in 2013, it has been stretched to 7,400 for this year’s event.

Viktor Hovland Course History

Norway’s Viktor Hovland has appeared three times at the PGA Championship and made the cut each time. Unfortunately, none of those weekends developed into any type of charge up the leaderboard. He will look to continue his torrid scoring at one of the toughest championship courses in the country.

Viktor Hovland Recent Form

Hovland is a grinder and typically plays better on more challenging tracks. He rang the bell at the Players Championship, finishing third. He then placed seventh at the Masters and was leading until faltering on Sunday. His last two events also showed Hovland at peak form, but one bad round at the RBC Heritage and Wells Fargo Championship, respectively, tanked his standing on the leaderboard over the weekend. Hovland’s ballstriking has been world-class all season.

Viktor Hovland Betting Outlook

For the range of odds we’re getting on Hovland, he certainly has the firepower to hang with the big boys at Oak Hill. He has made all 14 cuts this season, including six top-10 finishes. His once dreadful short game has been shored up to be plenty satisfactory and has contributed to his strong campaign. The Oklahoma State standout is also getting a pretty sweet +260 line to crack the top-10 this week, which certainly deserves a nice aggressive wager. Oak Hill demands expertise from tee to green, which Hovland has in spades. If he can hit a high percentage of greens in regulation, he will push to get his hands on the Wannamaker Trophy.
