Washington Football Team at Dallas Cowboys Odds and Game Pick (2020)

The middle of the three Thanksgiving Day NFL games has shaped up to be a critical NFC East battle. First place in the division will be on the line when the Washington Football Team battles the Dallas Cowboys. Both teams are coming off of wins and will be looking to keep the momentum rolling. The betting odds for the game offer a slight edge to the home team.

Overview

Washington’s offense has looked rejuvenated since Alex Smith assumed the starting quarterback job in the wake of Kyle Allen’s injury. Last week’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals marked the fourth straight game in which Washington scored 20 points or more, a number they reached only twice in the first six games. The running back duo of Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic has quietly turned into one of the best backfield tandems in the NFL. Of course, defense remains the heart and soul of the Football Team. Chase Young and cohorts will look to pressure Andy Dalton in a manner similar to the first meeting between the teams last month.

The Dallas Cowboys upset the red-hot Minnesota Vikings last week to insert their names back in the NFC East race. Getting Andy Dalton back from injury certainly helped, but most of that victory has to be chalked up to Mike McCarthy’s watermelon-smashing pregame speech. Dallas’ defense has been playing much better in recent weeks and will look to continue that trend against Washington. The Cowboys are 30-21-1 all-time in their annual Thanksgiving Day home game.

Trends

  1. Washington 2020 Betting Trends: 5-5 ATS; 4-6 to the Over
  2. Cowboys 2020 Betting Trends: 2-8 ATS; 5-5 to the Over
  3. Washington is 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following a straight-up victory.
  4. The Cowboys are 8-1 straight up against Washington in Thanksgiving Day games.
  5. The Over has hit in eight of the last ten head-to-head meetings between Washington and the Cowboys.

Prop Bet

Logan Thomas Over 29.5 Receiving Yards (-112 at 888sport)
Washington tight end Logan Thomas is coming off of one of his poorest games of the season. His two catches for a mere six yards against the Bengals was not expected, given Cincinnati’s inability to defend the TE position this season. The positive we come away with is a buy-low spot on Thomas’ yardage total for this Thanksgiving matchup. His target share hasn’t faltered since Alex Smith became the starting quarterback, with five in each of the last two games. What’s more, in the first game against the Cowboys this year, Thomas caught four of four targets for 60 yards and a score. The Cowboys have not contained tight ends with much success this season, surrendering 44 receptions and 537 receiving yards on 58 targets to the position. Assuming Thomas will receive his typical 5-6 looks, I like his odds of clearing 29 yards receiving on Thursday.

Bottom Line

The point spread for this game has followed an interesting path in terms of movement. After opening on the lookahead as Cowboys -1.5, it took enough Washington money to move to -1 ahead of Sunday’s games. The books reopened the line at Cowboys -2.5 following Sunday’s action and the market was willing to move it up to -3. We’ll take it!

After being written off by the public, it’s a pretty good bet to assume that those same ordinary Joe bettors will be rushing to back the Cowboys in this Thanksgiving showdown. Washington sets up as an excellent contrarian play that dominated Dallas in the first meeting this year. Kyle Allen quarterbacked that game, and I’m fully confident in saying Alex Smith is an upgrade.

While Dallas’ defense has been playing better, the key battle within this game for me is the Cowboys’ offensive line against the Football Team pass rushers. This isn’t the Dallas O-line we’ve grown accustomed to over the years. I like Chase Young, Montez Sweat, and the rest to bring the heat on Thursday. If nothing else, this will be a close game, but I’ll go ahead and call the outright upset too.

Pick: Washington Outright and Washington +3 (+125 and -118 respectively at 888sport)
