Washington Football Team vs. San Francisco 49ers Odds And Game Pick (2020)

The Washington Football Team was one of two NFC East teams to pull major road surprises in Week 13 of the NFL season. Now, in Week 14, Washington will try to continue its forward momentum at a neutral site. The San Francisco 49ers have relocated to Arizona for an originally scheduled home game, due to COVID-19 restrictions put in place by their home county in the Bay Area, Santa Clara County. The 49ers will play a regular road game in Dallas on Dec. 20 and then face the Arizona Cardinals on Dec. 26. Arizona is the nearby hub which makes logistical sense for the team. They will be in Arizona for the next few weeks, with their early-January status being uncertain. If the 49ers are to have any realistic chance at making the playoffs, they have to win this game in Arizona against Washington.

Overview

The Washington Football Team fell behind the unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers 14-3, and it seemed their hopes of winning had vanished. Yet, the Washington defense put on a clinic in the second half. The team gave up only three points after halftime. The offense came alive and tied the game at 17-17. The Washington defense then stopped Pittsburgh on a fourth down and scored a go-ahead field goal. With The Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger trying to drive for a game-tying field goal, Washington came up with an interception and sealed a 23-17 win which keeps coach Ron Rivera’s team in the hunt in the NFC East. The NFC East remains a terrible division, but in Week 13, Washington and the New York Giants both pulled off huge road stunners. The Giants won in Seattle against the Seahawks on Sunday. Washington was able to respond with a win on Monday to tie the Giants at 5-7 in the division. The Giants have the head-to-head tiebreaker, but Washington has the less difficult schedule down the stretch. Winning here against San Francisco in Arizona would give Washington a leg up in the division title chase.

San Francisco needs this game for its playoff hopes. The NFC’s last few playoff hopefuls have not pulled away from the rest of the competition. The Minnesota Vikings are 6-6. The Chicago Bears are 5-7. The Arizona Cardinals are 6-6. The 49ers, at 5-7, are still very much in the hunt, but now they have to start winning. Jimmy Garoppolo and George Kittle, the two most important players on the Niners’ offense, remain out, which leaves Nick Mullens at quarterback and Deebo Samuel as the 49ers’ most important receiver. The 49ers’ defense – normally reliable – got smoked by the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen this past week. The path to victory against Washington depends on avoiding turnovers while the defense pressures Washington quarterback Alex Smith. Washington running back Antonio Gibson is out for this game, so the 49ers know if they can shut down the Washington passing attack, it will be hard for the NFC East contender to generate any production on offense.

Trends

  • Washington is 4-1 ATS in its last five games as an underdog.
  • Washington is 5-2 ATS in its last seven games.
  • The 49ers are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games after gaining over 350 yards in their previous game.

Bottom Line

The Washington upset of Pittsburgh shows that Ron Rivera’s team has some talent, but the 49ers are a better-coached team that lost to a red-hot Buffalo Bills squad. Washington doesn’t have anything close to the weapons the Bills enjoy. San Francisco’s defense will play really well in this game and win.

Pick: 49ers -3.5
